    For the computer nerds

    What is TWAIN?

This was very interesting to me. At my job, I make reference to TWAIN drivers all of the time, and I had no idea of the history or what it "stands for." Funny, and interesting.

I guess they could have called it "taint".

    Re: For the computer nerds

    From WIKIPEDIA:

TWAIN is a standard software protocol and applications programming interface (API) that regulates communication between software applications and imaging devices such as scanners and digital cameras.
The latest version of the TWAIN standard is TWAIN 2.0, released on November 13, 2008.

The word TWAIN is not an official acronym; however, it is widely known as "Technology Without An Interesting Name." The official website notes that "[this name] seems to haunt the standard."
The TWAIN group originally launched in 1992 by several members of the imaging industry, with the intention of standardising communication between image handling software and hardware. The word TWAIN is from Rudyard Kipling's "The Ballad of East and West" — "...and never the twain shall meet..." — reflecting the difficulty at the time of connecting scanners and personal computers.

    Re: For the computer nerds

I always find it funny how so many threads here asking for help or something like to use the words "geeks" and "nerds." Can they call you "morons" "idiots" or other similar words for asking questions? I guess if you don't know the answer in a way you shouldn't be insulting the people that are going to in return help you out or give you the answer.

Most geeks and nerds don't view being called a geek or a nerd as an insult, just FYI.
It's mostly the "non-geeks" that consider it so, IMO.

I work in IT and I take offense to it so I guess that makes me one of the non-geeks. You don't see someone with an account question go to someone someone in accounting and say "hey accounting dork, tell me what this number stuff is all about."

Don't be hatin' man. I am a nerd myself. And it's ok if we call each other "nerds." It's only when non-nerds use that word that it becomes disrespectful. For example, my friend Brad is a big World of Warcraft player. When I call him on the phone, I can say something like, "What's up, nerd?" and it's cool, because he knows that I'm just chillin' playing Eve Online. But if Johnny Football Star calls him a nerd, then it's offensive, because he's not one of us. That's a hate crime, man.

FWIW, I wasn't asking for help. Might want to read the original post.

I work for a software company and consider myself to very much be a "computer nerd." I was merely pointing something out that I found entertaining, something that only a computer person probably would find entertaining, hence the "For the computer nerds" thread title.
