    Assistant Coaches - Wrestling

What names are people hearing or hope they hear mentioned as possible assistants to our new wrestling coach?

I like the hire of Jackson myself and have read/heard that many others do as well, especially if Jackson assembles an experienced staff.

Is Mike van Arsdale a possibility?

    Your thoughts on potential assistants???

I don't think it would be a terrible idea to take the Paulsons away from Nebraska, would be great for our guys to practice against.

    Must get the Paulsons

I think Heskett would be good if we could get him.

I like the fact that ISU is going to be a regional training center for Team USA now that Jackson is here.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Paulsons. They need a place to train and can get a two for one deal. The only problem would be them leaving their mentor in CB.

    Re: Assistant Coaches - Wrestling

Heskett should be top choice, both for his ability, his maturity, and his desire for something better than a coach. If he could get into the AD assist job after a few years of coaching, it would be a plus. Also go after the Paulsons, Gallick and see if Zeke Jones could run the training center.

This article is a little old, last Oct, but sounds like we would be a perfect fit for the Paulsons.

    Re: Assistant Coaches - Wrestling

I don't see how we pull Heskett out of Ohio State to become an assistant at ISU when:

    a) he is from Ohio
    b) OSU has placed higher than ISU at Nat'ls the past 2 seasons
    c) I doubt we could best any current deal he currently has. Not enough to make it worthwhile anyway.

    and

    4) he is working directly with Gene Smith, gaining valuable AD experience at a school with the 1st or 2nd largest athletic budget in the nation

I talked to Travis today at a graduation party, and got the feeling he and Trent would love to be back in Ames (especially if the training facility is here). Great kid to talk to and add my name to those that would love to see the Paulsen's team up with KJ.

I guess I'm just not as fired up as everyone else about the Paulson boys.

They are after Donny Pritzlaff from Wisconsin. Now HE would be a great get.

Why would he be a great get? He is thirty years old. I'd rather have someone who can train with our athletes for many more years. Paulsons are just hitting their prime. They were a part of a special Nebraska group this year.

Seriously dude, you're a hawkeye fan first. You're "objective" opinion is worth about a handful of buttwipe.

    Re: Assistant Coaches - Wrestling

Don Pritzlaff is a guy many think is qualified to be a HC at the highest level. He is a great teacher and most importantly a great recruiter (something that KJ needs badly). The Wiscy program was good and went to near great due largely to Pritzlaff.
If you can't get Heskett (we can't) then this is the prize of the staff. (think of a wrestling version of Tom Herman.

In wrestling circles, this would be HUGE!

Getting the Paulsons would be great but they cover the same weights so that is not a great use of $$$ on assistants.

We need the Paulsons back and there is no question about it- we NEED Pritzlaff on staff and there is really no doubting that either.

    Re: Assistant Coaches - Wrestling

I know who Pritzlaff is. Didn't know he was regarded as someone who could be head coach at highest level.

If true then he will probably be a head coach somewhere soon, not assistant at ISU.

IMO Nebraska was much better and most improved team in the country this year (I am sure Paulsons had something to do with that). Would have been nat. champs w/ PD. Wiscy did well in the B10 tourny but they were middle of the pack in big10 IIRC.

Don't forget how great ISU was the twins final season. That team really overachieved and nearly won it all. Seems success follows the Paulsons.
