    new waukee head basketball coach..

Idk if this was posted anywhere, but last wednesday it was announced that Matt Woodley (former Drake player) left his assistant coaching job at Washington State to be head coach at Waukee High. i thought i heard woodley's name being throw around as a replacement to Keno at Drake, but that didnt happen.... needless to say this is coup by Jim Deau the AD at waukee. you probably arent going to get much better the HC spot in Iowa high school basketball

that gives the current freshman three years to learn his system, which is good considering the freshman at Waukee are supposed to be pretty good in boys basketball

Wow!!! Thats kind of dumb to quit as an assistant coach in major college basketball to coach high school. Go from making 80-100 k a year to making 4 k or whatever coaching in high school pays.

I am curious why Matt would leave the job at Washington State to become a high school basketball coach. He appeared to be an up and comer at the college level.

That being said, the Woodley family certainly has a great legacy of coaching here in Iowa.

I believe that it will turn out to be a temporary thing until he gets another job in college. He is not even teaching and the money can't be that great to keep him here. But who knows. I grew up in Dodge playing baseball with Matt along with Randy Reiners the ex Iowa QB and lots of the rest of us scrub guys.

He was pretty highly regarded as an asst coach, I wonder if he is just doing this for a year so he doesnt have to start all over at somewhere he might not really fit in at. he can pick n choose his job next year.

Woodley was unemployed. His old boss, former Wash. State coach Tony Bennett, took the head job at Virginia, and Matt was not offered a spot on the staff at UVa.

Re: new waukee head basketball coach..

from the tone of the article it seems like he was sick of the college coaching because it was too much business and not as much teaching the kids to play. sounds like he really wants to be close to home as well. hopefully for waukee its not a one or two year thing because waukee has some serious talent coming up including a freshman team that went undefeated, and a couple sophomores on varsity, one of which was a starter.

He SHOULD have been offered the Drake job. At least he was an asst coach with actual ties to the university, not just ties to the AD with hyphenated names.

How do you go from being in the running on a DI college head coaching job to a HS coach?

read the article from the original post... sounds like he was pretty much sick of the college game because there was too much work and the 15-16 hours days were to much to deal with. plus all his family is in iowa

That's what I would say too if I just lost an assistant coach job with one of the better up-and-coming coaches out there only to end up at a high school in WDM.

Waukee is actually its own town. Its not part of West Des Moines.

Why the heck do all the car dealership commercials always say "The Waukee side of West Des Moines?" Is it way to mention both towns to get more people to come?
