    Weird Coincedence?

I can't help but think good things are going to happen for basketball next season. Just compare the line-ups from 99-00 team to the 09-10 potential line-up.

    PG 09-10 Garrett
    99-00 Tinsley
This comparison is not that great. Tinsley could shoot from anywhere on the court. Garrett isn't that stellar. Garrett can slash very well and get to the rim. Tinsley could do the same. Tinsley had better ball security, but if Garrett can improve on this. We can do well.

    SG 09-10 Gilstrap
    99-00 Nurse
Nurse could spot-up and shoot and handle the ball. He also could create a pretty decent shot. From what is said about Gilstrap, it sounds like he can be filling that spot. Plus Nurse was maybe 5-11, Gilstrap is 6-6.

    G-F 09-10 Staiger
    99-00 Horton
Horton was a shooter, plain and simple. Leave him open and he will destroy you. Staiger can do the same exact thing. I think Staiger probably has a bit more athleticism than Kantrail did. Scary.

    F-C 09-10 Brackins
    99-00 Fizer
Both All-American out of high school. I don't think Fizer was All-Big 12 his SO year, but he was very good. Just look at the difference between SO Fizer and JR Fizer. If that transformation, happens with Brackins...

    F-C 09-10 Ham or Dendy
    99-00 Shirley
Shirley was a tall dude that could finish farily well around the hoop. He could rebound. Play some pretty good D. I think Ham could be that player for next year. Shirley was the dude that knew what to do when Fizer would get doubled. One of these two needs to be that player when Brackins gets doubled.

These are just some thoughts to mull around with. The question for this team is how well the coaching staff can develop these players and if they can learn and live with their different roles. If that happens, we will have something really special.

I think we will have a solid season. Things just look really good right now.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you come into the season with the expectation that this team will even compare to that team, you're nuts.

I haven't seen anyone handle the rock like Tinsley in years. You just watched him with the ball and it did WHATEVER he wanted it to. You never doubted he would lose control of it.

I like Garret but ain't seen that out of him. And in my mind you either have that skill by college...or you never will.

    Re: Weird Coincedence?

Two things I'm still worried about...How good will our point guard play be? Depth at the 3 if Lucca and Boozer leave? Dendy and maybe Vanderbeken could play some 3 on offense, but I'm not sure about defense.

I wouldn't exactly say that Tinsley could shoot from anywhere, he could get into the lane and finish at any time. Garret is a serviceable PG, Tinsley was phenomenal.

Nurse was a shooter with adequate ball handling, nowhere near the attacking style that Gilstrap seems to be...hard to compare until we actually see him play a few games.

    G-F 09-10 Staiger
    99-00 Horton
Horton was a shooter, plain and simple. Leave him open and he will destroy you. Staiger can do the same exact thing. I think Staiger probably has a bit more athleticism than Kantrail did. Scary.

In no way imagineable is Lucca more athletic than Horton...it isn't even close. Staiger may be a more consistent spot up shooter, but he certainly doesn't have near the same ball handling abilities.

    F-C 09-10 Brackins
    99-00 Fizer
Both All-American out of high school. I don't think Fizer was All-Big 12 his SO year, but he was very good. Just look at the difference between SO Fizer and JR Fizer. If that transformation, happens with Brackins...

Both very good players but different types of power forwards.

Ham could develop into being a Shirley type player, I think you have that right. Shirley was a very good rebounder and knew his role in that he would only take wide open shots.

These are just some thoughts to mull around with. The question for this team is how well the coaching staff can develop these players and if they can learn and live with their different roles. If that happens, we will have something really special.

I see what you're getting at, and agree on some points, but there are way more questions unanswered than answered at this point.

    Re: Weird Coincedence?

With Brackins coming back, I think the comparison is there to be made.

The difference is that our supporting cast of Nurse, Horton and Johnson was better than anything we can put on the floor next year. Particularly if you look at the shooting abilities of Nurse and Kantrail, versus Lucca (if he's back, and anyone else).

I think Craig could have an even bigger season/bigger impact that Marcus did. He's more flexible and can play further out than Fizer did.

But the key to the '00 team was Tinsley - and sorry, there's no comparison to be made with DG. On his best day he can't handle or dish like Jamaal could. But that's not much of an insult. JT was a once ever few decades type of player. If DG simply improves - he'll be more than adequate.

It's nuts to call for anything like the success of the '00 season - in terms of wins, much less conf titles or elite 8 run. But the comparisions are similar enough to think that a solid season, upwards of 20 wins and an NCAA birth are there for the taking.

    Re: Weird Coincedence?

A couple things. 99-00 Tinsley was a poor shooter. Horton would have been a great PG, beats Steiger in ball handling by a lot. Comparing Nurse and Gilstrap is tough. Shirley wasn't a starter, Stevie Johnson was.

I don't think we can ever compare these 2 lineups. 99-00 was 3 guards, a SF and a PF. 09-00 is probably going to be 2 guards, a SF, a PF and a C. Plus, Brackins and Fizer are such different types of players. Next year's team has the potential to have so much more depth than that team, though.

    Re: Weird Coincedence?

The Elite 8 team had toughness. They also had guys like Horton who could lock-down on defense and guard the other teams best guard/SF.

I don't see many things in common between the two teams. Other than both teams had a big time front-court player. Both teams have completely different identities and head coaches.

The only comparison anyone should ever make about Garrett and Tinsley is that they both played Basketball at Iowa State.
