    How good would the "Texas Conference" be?

    I brought this up in a different thread...

    How good would an all-Texas conference be? BCS?

    Where would you rank it amongst the other conferences?

    Texas
    Texas Tech
    Texas A&M
    Baylor
    TCU
    UTEP
    Houston
    Rice
    North Texas
    Texas State

    Wouldn't ever fly, but it would be a pretty decent conference.

    It looks okay, not great. Texas is elite. Tech, A&M, and TCU are potentially pretty good. Everybody else looks somewhere between mediocre and terrible.

    Re: How good would the "Texas Conference" be?

    Texas is TX .... but what makes TX awesome is Oklahoma (OU).

    I would put them just under the Big10 ... about 5th or 6th toughest conference.

    Replacing either UTEP or Texas State with SMU might be better.

    Re: How good would the "Texas Conference" be?

    There would be too much of a talent difference from top to bottom with the likes of Texas kicking the poo out of Rice, Texas State, Houston and North Texas. That way no one would really take Texas serioulsy as a NC contender. (see Kansas State under Snyder) Just saying.

    Exactly. The Texas schools benefitted far more from the Big 8 than vice versa.

    The SWC wasn't a "top tier" conf. like the Big10, SEC, Big 8, Pac 10 and so Texas, A&M, etc. of the 80's early 90's fell off the map. The in-state stars would flee to the Big 8 and elsewhere......enter Big 12.........enter Texas football dominance again. Now they can keep their homegrown talent in arguably the most talent rich football state.

    I even remember watching some good Baylor teams in bowls back in the old days of the SWC. It makes you wonder how strong the SWC teams were back in the day.

    Re: How good would the "Texas Conference" be?

    Now that thats happened though, how many more could schools like TCU keep in state if they were in a BCS conference (assuming this got BCS status)? They could get a lot better.

    Nope! That was a little before my time. I guess this thread is pretty much pointless then..

    Before your time? It existed until 1995, then dissolved/split in '96.

    Re: How good would the "Texas Conference" be?

    That would be a decent football conference, but most conferences play more than 1 sport. That conference would be brutal in basketball. For that reason alone it would never last.

    Would be just like Big 12:
    Texas
    Texas Tech
    Texas A&M
    Baylor
    TCU = Nebraska
    UTEP = Missouri
    Houston = Kansas
    Rice = Kansas State
    North Texas = Colorado
    Texas State = Iowa State
