Massive turnover in men's program must stop

So, it looks like we might lose five players this year who have not used up their eligibility yet (Eik, Mann, Lucca, Boozer, and Lee). It will be very difficult to ever be any good unless we stop losing almost half of our roster year afer year. Mac might as well start recruiting all jucos as most of the guys he brings in leave in less than three years anyway.

I don't really count Cam Lee since he wasn't a scholarship player. Granted he has had some decent spot minutes here and there, but losing a walk on should not be a big deal or counted as part of the turnover IMO.

    Also....

We haven't lost Lucca and Boozer yet. Let's not get the cart too far ahead of the horse.

And I'd rather have Dendy/Oliver over Mann/Eik so that was an upgrade. Can't complain there.

We haven't lost Lucca or Boozer. I hope they both stay. Let's not jump to conclusions.

Agreed. A big point of recruiting is trying to recruit over the players that you have now to make the team better. If recruiting over people causes some people to leave, that cannot be helped.

isn't this happening to other programs too.. even 'elite' schools? This isn't just an ISU or just a McD thing.

I think we need to not grant releases. I know of the recruiting concerns with not releasing players but our willingness to grant player releases, basically giving players a free out, is backfiring. Transferring is currently "acceptable" at ISU.

While it may impact recruiting at least those that we get clearly know what commitment ISU expects and ISU will stop getting jerked around.

It's the same with professional sports where players sit out under contract wanting a new deal. Once the team surrenders to the first player, year-after-year others follow. The same goes with the concern of acquiring free agents but if I were a GM I wound never surrender. I would try to re-work deals early to players that clearly have outplayed their contracts, but once a player threatens to sit out... no negotiation. Period.

I think ISU needs to stick to their guns and make players accountable to their commitment. The act of transferring has been made acceptable at ISU over the last 4 years... we need to get tough and break that mindset.

Re: Massive turnover in men's program must stop

Lucca is the only one of this batch that really bothers me. Eik does a bit, as I think he would end up being a good bench player.

Can't blame the rest for wanting to go and get minutes elsewhere.

I'm happy for the simple fact that our top returner is actually returning for the first time in GMac's tenure.

Re: Massive turnover in men's program must stop

I love how everyone complains that we don't have any Big 12 caliber players except Brackins, but as soon as a few leave everyone is all up on Mac about losing players. If they aren't worthy to play at this level, why do you care?

Re: Massive turnover in men's program must stop

Had ISU not struggled to find a BBall coach the last time around, Chizik and Sanderson just left... we would probably be finding ourselves watching a new basketball coach.

This turnover is incredible. The inability to bring in stable and quality recruits has ruined this program.
