    Jamie Vanderbeken

    I feel that Jamie can be a HUGE asset to our team next year. Ife we utilize him the right way with pick and pops, kick-outs when there are double teams on Brackins etc.. that he coule be our most improved player next year! He really shined towards the end of last year. any thoughts?

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    I hope you're right, but I'm sorry I have some big concerns.
    I only had the ability to attend one game in person this year (@ Houston), and that's probably not enough to make a rational evaluation, but let me just say I hope you're right and I hope JV can continue to improve and make contributions.
    I also feel there's a possibility to recruit over him (I'm trying to be positive and restrained here).
    He got a lot better Go2Guy. He needs to gain some weight, but he was our 2nd best big at the end of the year IMO.
    Re: Jamie Vanderbeken
    If we can defend with Gilstrap, Brackins, and Vanderbeken in the game...We can force at least one of the opponents bigs out of the paint...Which would be very good news for Brackins.
    Yeah, but can JVB defend? Is Dendy too small to play the other post?
    If we can just catch a few breaks, we will have ton of options this year. A lot of our success is going to depend on the continued improvement of DG. If he can start to finish around the basket (and I think with a little strength he can), things will be good. And of course, we are assuming that Gilstrap comes in and is great right away. That's assuming a lot, but that's what we need.
    He can, and does often shoot the trey.
    But I prefer we leave the 3pt shot to the perimeter shooters and have our 6-11 dudes do what the perimeter dudes can't:
    + rebound
    + 2nd line defense for the dribble-penetration
    + defend opposing 6-11 centers.
    + 2nd-chance shots and put-backs
    + hit the <5-ft jumper.
    As Bryce noted, JV may need more weight, but from what I saw, I would prefer he gains more quickness and athleticism - which I realize is not going to happen if it hasn't by this time in his life.
    So perhaps you guys are right - let him gain some weight, muscle and continue to shoot the trey and focus on D.
    Re: Jamie Vanderbeken
    He will be exteremely useful. He's a huge reason why we almost beat Oklahoma. As long as we can hide him guarding a less than offensive post, he'll be fine. He's a good shot blocker and really hits the outside shot well. His rebounding was better than expected in my opinion. He'll see a lot of time.
    JVB was recruited to be an outside shooter. His ability to do that and stretch defenses is why we almost beat Oklahoma. If we are in a situation where we need stronger post defense and inside scoring, Big Ham, Dendy and Pomlee will see that time.
    +1
    He causes some match up problems. If you keep a guard out on him, he can shoot right over you. If you keep a big on him, you open of the middle for CB.
    He was one of our best 3 pt shooters last year and made some key shots at times.
