Lincoln Journal Star says Manning was "offered" job

Sorry if this has been posted already, but I haven't seen it.

This article says Manning was offered the job and turned it down, although Manning just says he spoke with Pollard and said he wasn't interested. Interesting how the media puts that spin on it.

Re: Lincoln Journal Star says Manning was "offered" job

We've gone into this before. Coaching hires aren't like hires in the business world. There are back channel communications, promises made, winks, loose contract offers made, etc. These things are shades of grey.

The point is this: Mark Manning was made to understand that if he wanted the job, it was his.

Re: Lincoln Journal Star says Manning was "offered" job

On Wednesday, Manning confirmed to the Journal Star that he was approached by Iowa State. Manning said he talked twice with ISU athletic director Jamie Pollard but decided he didn’t want to be a candidate.

Again, it's semantics. He was offered the job for all intents and purposes.

Can't blame Manning. It would be hard to leave a school for another one in the same conference.

"But Iím awful happy here at Nebraska and happy in the leadership of Coach Osborne and Bob Burton (NUís associate AD in charge of wrestling).Ē

Sounds like he values the importance of who he works for and is happy with his current situation.

Makes me wish the ISU job was an offer that's "too good to turn down"

Or he could have made it to interview 2 and been ruled out by JP in favor of another coach, and he's just saying this now to save face...

What do you want from Pollard? If he goes after top coaches and gets turned down you complain. If he would hire a schmuck who he knows would take the first offer, you would complain. No one knows who has and hasnt actually had an offer, and won't. But to complain because a competent hire says no, that's crazy.

Manning would have been a great hire, happy to see he was contacted.

That sounds like a likely scenario. But to get a second "look" also says something.

So do these suposed offered coaches call Cael first thing and ask for the inside scope why he left?

    I think it's a strong possibility.

I also think that those in wrestling circles know a little more about why he left than Cael has let on in public.
