What we are more likely getting with Swine Flu

I think this is a great read, with a lot of sublinks in it...more common sense than anything else I have read, from a guy that has spent a lot of time in this field.

OK..I read the second half and the guy goes Art Bell, but the first half was solid...not saying the second half isn't entertaining....it is...

    Love the Art Bell reference.

You know things are getting blown out of proportion when even Coast to Coast AM is saying things are getting blown out of proportion.

Re: What we are more likely getting with Swine Flu

    Jon,
Most of what he writes is correct and was even announced last night. Mexico has had less than 20 deaths due to the virus. Secondly one thing that is wrong is that no pigs have been known to be infected with this strain at this point. They have tested pigs in the area where the first known case occurred and have not found it. You also will not get the virus from eating the meat. It is spread in secretions from direct contact or airborne secretions. it is something to be concerned about, but common sanitation practices help slow the spread.

Some of what he said is likely true, but that last part gets a little wacky.

All Fort Worth, TX schools closed down this morning and will be closed until at least 5/8, more likely 5/11.

I really think we'll have the same thing happening up here pretty soon.

I dock you 5 points for linking the slowest loading web page in the world. In fact I'm still waiting for it.

All sports/intrmurals had been closed down as of yesterday, but I hadn't heard the school part.

That might happen here IF there is a death related to the Swine flu.

I don't know why people say they had pork last night and it was tasty. Name one time in the media where it has said that the Swine flue was contagion from eating pork?

Swine flu is a recombinant virus made up mostly of human influenza virus, combined with a small part of swine and a small part of avian influenza. Why it was labelled as swine flu, who knows.

Most likely created in a lab and released either on accident or on purpose.

Re: What we are more likely getting with Swine Flu

I realize that this is no laughing matter, and I'm by no means working for the CDC.

However, it does seem to me that the word "pandemic" should be reserved for illnesses that kill more than a couple hundred people. Last I checked, we had one death here in the states (a very young child from Mexico), yet we're acting as if we all need to quarantine ourselves for the next month. I understand the death toll is rising in Mexico, but is only a couple hundred last I checked. (Before I get ripped, I want to be clear that I'm in no way discounting lives lost because they weren't here in the states...I'm just addressing our specific response here in the US).

Am I being entirely insensitive and/or ignorant when I ask if this is being overblown?

I heard on the radio yesterday that every year there are upwards of 50,000 flu deaths in the United States every year and several hundred thousand world-wide. That doesn't seem to be a big deal, yet this swine flu is.

I'm interested to see if anyone else agrees/disagrees with me or if anyone could offer me a different perspective that I'm not considering...
