Hot Water Heater Problem / Plumber Recommendation?

Does anyone know anything about hot water heaters or recommend any good plumbers in the Ankeny area? We have lost hot water. We have a Rheem PowerVent 2 residential gas water heater. Its 3-4 years old. The thermostat LED status light is flashing twice at a time, which indicates "lockout condition, ignition failure" according to the troubleshooting section of the owner's manual. The "solution" section states "Third failed ignition attempt. Unplug to reset control. Contact local qualified service agent. Make sure manual gas shutoff valve is open. If pressure is too high the valve will not operate. Refer to "Installation" Section. Clean any scale buildup from burner and pilot assembly. The spark ignitor assembly could be damaged or broken. If so, replace assembly. Bleed air from gas line." I'm sure that I would be best to contact a plumber, but thought I'd see whether anyone here had any advice or recommendations. Thanks.

Re: Hot Water Heater Problem / Plumber Recommendation?

I am a Rheem rep. Do you feel comfortable trying to reset this yourself? I always suggest calling a plumber but after plugging it back in turn the temp setting knob all the way back and forth 6 times. I no longer live in Ankeny so I'm drawing a blank on whom to call. Check the yellow pages, or you might try Cook Plumbing, they were installing Rheem the last I knew or try Schlievert Plbg.

Well, I think I reset it by unplugging and plugging back in. The LED indicator light is flashing fast now. How long should it take for the water to heat up?

No, it is just a matter of unplugging and plugging back in typically. The only problem you have is that the controls on your model are no longer used. The safe thing is to just call a plumber.

Well, hopefully it was as simple as resetting it. I'll wait and see.

Good call on 72 Degrees, they are mostly heating but the sequence of operations on a Power vent water heater is very similar to that of a furnace...right up their alley.

Also go outside and make sure the intake is not clogged.

let it cycle for a while to allow it to recover. Keep an eye on it, fortunately you still have 2 years on the tank warranty. Is the blower operating?

Yeah, the blower works. I get the constant reminder from the noise when I'm watching tv downstairs.

that is good, it is operating. I don't know how long it was down but to catch up it might run for a while.
