    Dish problems during storms

Every time it storms, even if it is just a small one, my dish loses the signal. Is that common or do I need it "adjusted" or something?

For us, it usually takes something more than today, but today has knocked ours silly.

I think that a lot of it depends on the wind, and whether it knocks your dish out of alignment with the satellites.

For us, wind doesn't seem to be a factor. It seems to go out when there's lightening.

My mediacom was out several hours today which has been very unusual. I will say mediacom has really improved its telephone customer service, which was non-existent a year ago.

My Directv has been searching for satellite most of the last 24 hours. It's really not doing much outside, weather-wise right now either. Frustrating...

Mediacom cut way back of overtime for thier workers. So when the cable goes out durning nonbusiness hours it may take longer to get it back than before.

That sounds like a larger problem. Have you disconnected and reconnected power to your box?

Kingcy- Makes sense. It went out for a short time during a storm a week or two ago, but it was a week-day and back up pretty quick. Different story today.

Upon further review, I went upstairs and it is actually quite windy and rainy. I guess I can't tell so much when I'm down in my dungeon...

    Re: Dish problems during storms

Typically, the closer your signal level is to the base line needed for reception, the less it takes to knock it out. I had dish at my old house, and it would go out constantly because the signal level was right above the threshold. There was also a tree limb close that would swing in front of it when it was windy. I cut that down and readjusted the dish. It was a lot better after that. We don't have too many problems with our new house.

    Re: Dish problems during storms

"Rain Fade" is an issue for DSS satellite systems. It's the biggest drawback by far to them. It happens when there is a lot of moisture in the air (as there clearly is today) between the receiving satellite dish and the transmitting satellite. Basically, moisture in the upper atmosphere "absorbs" RF energy sent from the satellite transmitter down to your receiver. This causes less of that RF energy to make it to your dish, resulting in a weaker signal. The better your dish is aimed, and the bigger the dish, the less effect rain fade will have on your signal.

Most DSS dishes are really small, so it doesn't take a whole lot of interference to cause them issues. They need to be aimed VERY well in order to minimize the effects of rain fade. In addition, in the spring summer and fall, moisture that is contained in leaves can cause interference as well.

I have my daughter convinced I am the smartest man in the world, because when the DTV starts to search for a signal, I find her and tell her to watch the window, because it show start raining real hard in about 5 or 10 minutes.

It's due to the rain, and heavy rain, and the density of the moisture and the signal not being able to go through those heavy bands.

Well I'm about fed up with it and thinking about calling Mediacom (gasp!).
