    ISU MBB '09/'10

With today's news, the MBB season this coming winter looks a lot brighter. Greg certainly had to let out a sigh of relief.

But to say the pressure is off him, would be inaccurate. Now, there is no excuse not to produce. One of the best players in the nation (and quite possibly the top returning scorer in the nation) is back. New talent arrives, one freshman with a nice resume and one experienced player that should do well - plus a few others.

It's NCAA tournament or bust in '09/'10. This should be the goal and anything less would not only be a disappointment, but just unsettling.

    Go get it.

At least this wasn't another "spin" diatribe.

I think all the pressure is on McDermott this year. If he doesn't produce this year then I will be on the fire Mac bandwagon. I said I would give him 4 years and this is year 4. Make or break year for him and the program in general.

Did we get a new point guard?

Does this mean no more new recruits/players for 09-10 season?

Right. I won't completely go to that extreme, but this is the general idea. We didn't lose players that we can't replace. I think Petey is our biggest loss from last season, simply for his reliability and being calm on the court at all times. He'll still be with the guys, so that will help some.

We still need a PG that can step up in big moments. However, this should still be an NCAA tournament team. Outside of a few teams, the Big 12 does not look like world beaters.

Your right, thats a pretty big extreme. This will be Mac's best chance to produce a good team, I just hope he gets it done.

I honestly doubt we'll be picked to finish above 8th in the league. That would make us a NIT team and not a NCAA team.

If we don't go next year, we won't go the year after either without Brackins and Gilstrap. Like you said in your first post. It's next year or bust.

Which could hurt the conference as a whole come tournament time. This would give the committee an excuse to select a few more Big East and ACC teams.

    Re: ISU MBB '09/'10

Here is a hypothetical, if Greg does make the NCAA this year; with Brackins likely leaving next year and Gilstrap with only one year of eligibility, will everyone be back on the fire McDermott bandwagon if they don't make the tourney in 2011.

I had no idea pre-season rankings determine if you get into the Tournament?

    Re: ISU MBB '09/'10

The goal for next year has to be the NCAA tournament, and I don't think it's out of the question. It's a realistic goal, IMO, but the Big 12 could be tough next year. However, to say GMac will be fired if we don't make it isn't grounded in reality. It would take an utter disaster for GMac to be fired.

With Brackins as a leader, I actually think we have the horses to win. He makes so many positions better...

    1) Gilstrap now doesn't have the pressure to come in and be the leading scorer. I feel much more comfortable asking him to come in and score 10-12 per game than 17-18.

    2) DG will benefit from not being forced into a scorer's role again. If Gilstrap can be the second option, Garrett will be much more effective as a distributor.

    3) JVB and Hamilton both have a ton of promise, but they'll benefit significantly from the double teams CB draws in the post.

They don't but it's a good reality check for the fan base. The fact that we were pretty bad last year and that the league is bringing in some great talent should temper expectations.

I would expect us to be in the conversation for the dance for most of the year but I don't see this team as a NCAA "lock" by any means.
