Ever run into an ISUer who...

doesn't have a freaking clue nor care about ISU athletics? So I'm living in Washington DC right now, and I run into this guy in the apartment building last night who was an Ames native and graduated ISU 2 years ago. He saw my I-State sweatshirt and started up the conversation. He asked if I ever get back to Ames and I indicated that I was back over the holidays and caught the incredibly frustrating SDSU game... his response was "oh, they always lose" which sounded like a generalization of all ISU sports. I made a couple other sports references and he looked at me like I was talking in Farsi. My girlfriend (who is a Badger) even brought up the Elite 8 women's b-ball and v-ball teams, and the guy was on another planet. Now I realize sports aren't everyone's cup of tea and people have different interests.... but c'mon! dude was an Ames native. You can't not at least know remotely whats going on in a small town like Ames where they Clones are THE team. It made me contemplate how many passive, disinterested ISU alum are actually out there? I started to think that it's no wonder ISU has had sporadic support for athletics over the years. Don't get me wrong, there is a very loyal, hardcore group of fans for ISU, but what is that percentage of alums who never gave a hoot for ISU before, during, and after there time in Ames? were these people victims of the 80s era hayden fry-eiu football indoctrination happening the state? were they just eternal pessimists? Perhaps these were the people Pollard was talking about when he talked about expanding the fan base.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Re: Ever run into an ISUer who...

Probably a guy who doesn't know anything at all about ISU. Yet, when he sees in the paper that the 'Clones beat EIU, calls friends or relatives to talk smack. I have Hawk friends and the wife's Husker relatives act that way to me. Every fan base has 'em.....

Yes I work with one. He use to leave ames on home football games because he didn't like the crowds in Ames he didn't even go to tailgate. He's dead to me.

Re: Ever run into an ISUer who...

omg, I know exactly what you're talking about.

In Austin, I am good friends with four other ISU alumni who all work at the same company I do. I am really the only one of the group that pays any attention to the Cyclones' fortunes. They will check the score of the Iowa game, but that's about it. I have had sporadic attendance when I try to organize game watches. I couldn't get any of them to make the trip with me to Waco for the Baylor football game (although I really don't blame anyone for not wanting to go to Waco).

I did meet a Clone fan in a retail store here shortly after the Chizik fiasco, and he at least knew some of the details of what transpired.

And not surprisingly, Hawk fans are as big of jerks down here as they are in Iowa, but that's for a different conversation.

I would say 50% of ISU students could give a crap less about sports in general, let alone Cyclone Athletics. I guess that probably gets smaller if they graduate and move a long way away.

Re: Ever run into an ISUer who...

This doesn't surprise me at all. I'd say about half the alums I have contact with at work don't follow sports much. I think sports apathy in general has more do to with it than ISU sports apathy in particular.

I could start a whole thread about this, but that is what winning does for programs. These apathetic people would start buying tickets if it became the "in" thing to do just to spend time with friends and business associates. Winning may not cure everything, but it sure helps.

Of the +/- 25k students on campus any given semester:

How many go to Football games - 6-7k?

How many go to Basketball games - 3k?

Top end number only about 25%

Sounds like most hawk fans. Can't tell you much about their program, just that they are the greatest team on earth.

I have heard this lots too, I could say I am going to the Kent St. football game last year and they would say, "Have fun tailgating, too bad that the football team will get killed though"
