    Direct Tv

I have Direct TV now, and as my man cave is close to being done, I want to get an HD DVR for new tv.

They won't offer me a free one, but will give me 100.00 off.

Dish Network will give me a heck of a deal to switch...question is, what you guys think?

Is it worth it to switch to Dish or should I just pay Direct tv?

Someone in DM had a HD DVR on craigslist for $75 yesterday. I don't know if it's legit or not. I wouldn't change to Dish if your happy with your current progrmaing.

    Re: Direct Tv

I'd keep working Directv for a free one. I managed to get a free one by flirting shamelessly with one of the female techs.

Mention the fact that Dish has a better offer and maybe they'll give in. If not, I'd pony the hundred and stick with Directv anyway.

I think it was 4 or 5 ISU football games were on DirecTV that weren't on Dish last year.

If you buy a HD DVR used, you'll need a new access card for it, just FYI, but it's an option.

Can you take an access card out of a non hd reciver and put it in a HD DVR? If not, how do you go about getting one from Directv? Cost?

I would think you would be able to on a non-RID receiver. If the receiver has a Receiver ID, the card is married to that receiver. Once the access card is associated with a receiver and account, it cannot be swapped into another receiver without calling DirecTV. The access card is tied to your account, as well as tied to the specific receiver it's been programmed to.

I think they run about 20 bucks.

eBay Guides - Directv Access Cards is pretty good advice.

If you have an older receiver you are replacing, you can probably have them just swap it in your account if you use the old card in the new receiver. I think this is all free.

    In short:
Adding a new receiver bought not from DirecTV: 20 bucks for a new access card

Replacing existing receiver with one bought not from DirecTV: Should be able to swap cards (doesn't matter if HD or not).

    Re: Direct Tv

If your contract is up at DirecTv, you need to speak with their cancellation department and ask to cancel your service. The cancellation department is separate from Customer Service. Customer Service does not have the authority to give you a better deal than $100 off.

When I asked to cancel my service they offered me a new dish and an HD DVR for free. They also waived the $9.99 HD fee for six months.

Just pay the $100, it is not worth the time, even though the HD DVR from Directv is a horrible POS.

I've had an HR20 and an HR21 for a long time without any issues. My HR20, which is probably 3 years old, does vibrate a little but that's it.

Just be aware that even though you're paying for the new DVR that they will extend your contract.

    Re: Direct Tv

I went from a DTV Tivo box to DTV's own HR-22, and the HR-22 really sucks in comparison to the Tivo box. I can't wait until the new DTV Tivo that's in development comes out.

Called the cancellation office, told them they could suck it. They said they would give me an HD Receiver or and HD DVR. Took the free HD DVR and purchased another HD Receiver!

They get installed tomorrow, they must not be that busy.

Thanks for the advice, worked out great.

You told them to "suck it" and they gave you a free receiver?
