    Sanderson, PR gift to Iowa

When Sanderson said he was leaving because Pennsylvania is "fertile ground" for high school wrestling and recruiting, I knew it was just going to be a matter of time before Brands would use it as a public relations statement. Here is that statement

Brands a big fan of Iowa High School Wrestling
    GlobeGazette.com :: Brands a fan of Iowa H.S. wrestling

I hate to say it... but I agree with him. Iowa wrestling has always been the best in the nation.... sorry, only time you'll ever hear me say this, he's right.

I agree, Clonegrad, but now not only does ISU have to get another coach, they have to battle a public relations nightmare created by Sanderson.

I'm not saying I'm gald Cael is gone, but I was beginning to wonder if his teams would be aggressive enought to beat Iowa on a consistent basis. They are good enough to win a lot of matches but don't score enough bonus points to win close meets and tourneys. If you want to be on top of wrestling today you need to beat Iowa on a regular basis. That means scoring a lot of points.

Iowa wrestling has been the definition of dominant the since 1974. 24 NCs? I think ... in 35 years. That's nearly 70% of the time they win it all!

Cael wasn't even born when they began this run - in fact he wasn't born for the first 5 under Gable.

Ask AC Slater - Iowa has been THE program for the last 30 years and that's nothing a throw-away statement by Cael is going to change.

Maybe, but it can't help, either.

When an outgoing coach says the reason he is moving on because the "wrestling" is better on the other side of the hill, that statement rankles a lot of people who never forget and will always associate that statement with Iowa State.

And like you said, Iowa has been a dominate wrestling program for 30 years, but the only thing fresh in the minds of these high school recruits is Sanderson winning four national titles and winning the Olympics. He's today's icon much like what Dan Gable was in the 70s.

And the reason why Iowa has been a dominate program is they take advantage of every opportunity presented to them -- and Brands couldn't wait to jump all over Sanderson's statement. I don't blame him. Smart move on his part.

Re: Sanderson, PR gift to Iowa

Sanderson's comments were a nice little token to Iowa wrestling and Brands & Co took advantage of it as they should have. Before CS jumped ship at ISU, Brands & Co knew they in their minds that they were a much better coaching staff then Sanderson & Co. CS leaving and making those comments just proved it to everyone else.

As they say, if you can't stand the heat, move away from the fire. It is what it is.......

Brands isn't **** without Gable holding his hand. Gable had the table set, all Brands had to do was sit down.

Iowa Wrestling took a hit when Gable was actually retired - and I expect it to take another (albeit smaller) hit now that he once again is trying to step away.

Sanderson did the last three years as a 27-29 year old newbie. His staff is largely inexperianced as well, he's going to be a monster in the coaching world and that's what Penn State saw.

Look at it this way, while "learning on the job" he placed 2nd, 5th & 3rd. Imagine once he's had a couple years to figure it out!

You do realize Brands replaced Zalesky and not Gable right? Gable didn't have any table set, Brands set his own table with the mess he walked into that Zalesky created.

All Iowa has done since Gable retired is win 5 of the 11 national titles since his retirement.

Stop it! It's a lot easier to argue your points when you don't know the facts.

I was just about to post the same thing. Brands has righted the ship -- albeit with a little help from Gable at the beginning of his coaching career at Iowa -- after Zalesky.

I think Zalesky's problem was he went out of his way NOT to be like Gable. I think he wanted to build his own legacy and not having it tied in with a legend.

Brands embraces the Gable legacy. Big difference there.

Cael stating in so many words that you can't win a Wrestling National Championship at Iowa State will prove do more damage to our program than he ever did good; and he did alot of good.

I wouldn't be so sure this is a huge coup for Iowa. Watch and wait before you jump off the ship. This could be a great day for Iowa State.
