    The return to reality...

ISU starts 2-0 in the conference where many expected an 0-2 start. Fans are jubilated, a good number now hopeful a .500 conference record is attainable and maybe even post-season life.

An OT loss to #6 Kansas does little to damper the spirit.

Then a pair of ugly losses this week.

I'd venture to guess this aught to put us back on Earth - returning us to reality. We've got a young team and a new coach trying to implement a new system. We lack an experienced point guard.

What's amazing is now the part of our game previously lacking - inside scoring - seems to now be a strength. Feed the Jiri, I say. Feed him well.

Anywho, I don't expect us to be jumping off bridges after these last 2 losses - still plenty of games to play. Yet I do think we'll have a bit different perspective of what to expect.

Regardless, it looks like we've regressed 2 months in the span of one week. That's not good.

Great time for a week off from play. I wouldn't want to be at practice this week.

I think you are right on! This is going to be a tough week to be a player at ISU. But that is OK. Hard work got us to that 2-0 start. GMac has the team playing hard and we enjoyed some of the results from that hard work. During the fall I think most of us thought it was going to be a long year. The progress that this team has shown might have raised our expectations. That is not a bad thing...that is a result of hard work by the players and good coaching by the staff. While that doesn't make the past two games more enjoyable (nothing will) it does show that we are heading in the right direction.

Agreed...time to put their feet back on the ground. I think its just hard for everyone after seeing some sparkles and then watching us struggle against teams everyone knows are bad.

    Re: The return to reality...

If I had to say now how the rest of the season will go, I would say like the first 2 weeks of conference play - we'll win some we shouldn't, and lose some we shouldn't. Sometimes we'll play over our level, and other times like a team of 7th graders. This will be our model of play as we continue to mature as a team.

As far as Hilton Magic goes - Fans are still learning to love our young players, new players, and old players w/ new attitudes (Jiri). The atmosphere at Hilton, I would guess will growo as our team does. As these youngsters mature, we are in for some great basketball, and the intensity of the fans will surely rise to the level of play of our team

As fans, we need to understand this keep an even keel, and continue to support. Good things are only a season away!

I agree wholeheartedly. Don't get down on the losses, this is what was suppose to happen this season.

    Re: The return to reality...

Give K-State some credit on this one. They played great defense and a very diciplined offense. They reminded me a lot today of the way we used to play under Tim Floyd and Larry Eustachy. They have a lot of seniors on that team and it showed. Bob Huggins is a great coach.

We've still got a good team, but we're young and that showed today.

Hilton Magic is still present. You could really hear the crowd during parts of the game. The team just couldn't sustain runs and keep the crowd in it.

Why did they look disciplined? Huggins coached teams at Cincy looked like Wayne Morgans teams to me.

From where I was sitting it looked like their assistant in the brown suit was doing most of the coaching and was riding the refs, etc. Huggy got on the officials a few times, but the assistant looked like he was just exploding on some calls. Maybe they brought in a ringer assistant to coach and just leave the recruiting to Huggybear. (see Craig Neal at Iowa)

    Huh??

They waited until a shot opened up before they shot it, often at the end of the shot clock. They were in our guys faces nearly every time we got the ball. They never seemed to panic. I was watching this team, not Cincy.

Once they got ahead, Huggy kicked butt to not let up.

By the looks of things, it may be 2-3 years before ISU is challenging for the Big 12 title. I saw some aTm highlights tonight. That team has gone through an amazing transformation. ISU is going to have to go through the same transformation.

Let's face it, the Cyclone MBB house has been out of order for quite awhile. That won't fly in the Big 12. Something went wrong at the end of 2000-2001 season, and it hasn't been right since. I think we've now got the right man at the helm, and it's going to take him a couple of years to get the house fully in order.

    Re: The return to reality...

With a road win at CU, and protecting the home court against teams we should beat, this team could have/should have gone 8-8 in the conference and into the NIT. Those opportunities are gone. What I now hope for is some consistency/continuity for a whole game, and improvement from Wesly, Cory J, and Dunson. And a point guard to show up before next season starts.

    Re: The return to reality...

    jbhtexas,

Any ideas on what happened at the end of that season? I mean, besides the obvious (i.e. losing to Hampton). Personally, I think that while LE deserves a lot of credit for what he did in his two championship years, I also think he deserves a lot of blame for what happened in his last two seasons with many more recruiting misses that hits, that ugly road losing streak, etc. Wayne Morgan had a decent first season and a pretty good 2nd season I thought, but last season was an absolute disappointment. It just seems that with the last two coaches we can't sustain any level of success.

This present team is certainly going through growing pains, but I do think McDermott is the right man for the job.
