    origin of "homer"

Bear with me: I am curious as to the origin, and specific definition of "homer." I have only recently been a part of the internet forum/ blog/ chat community, and not especially active at that (CF is my only account) - which is really the only place I've heard (seen) it used. Please enlighten!

    Re: origin of "homer"

A homer is a person who thinks their team is a great team basically because that's the team they cheer for. So since I'm an ISU fan... and if I start to say we're as good as Kansas... people might call me a homer because I'm saying we're really good... when we're not even ranked... hope that helps a little

A homer is one who gives their team extra credit... that's a little better definition.

And a better example is if there are two teams that are close in ability. A homer will think his team will easily win and without giving much statistical proof to back it up.

not necessarily saying he's a homer, since he's given alot of airtime to the Clones since Deace left...

but he did say the Hawks would go 11-1 last year...

I'm gonna venture a guess that you're football prediction for ISU in '06 wasn't anywhere close to 4-8....

let's face it - all of us thought we'd be 8-4 before the Toledo game...

So going off the previous example, we'd be close to a bunch of homers then, right?

for the most part... everyone is a homer and predicts their team to do better than the average person might. People who rediculously predict their team to do above and beyond get called out by others as homers. That sound right?

Well expecting 11-1 and going 6-7 is a bit larger of a homer than expecting 8-4 and going 4-8.

But a homer is still a homer.

I am definitely a slight (slight*) homer. My pride and enthusiasm gets in the way, and I generally predict 1 or 2 more wins in FB than we actually get, and about 3 more in BB than we end up w/. sigh... oh well... least im not a MAJOR homer like all Nebraska, KU, and Hawk fans.
