    What shocked me the most...

I've never really been a wrestling fan, but I respect the sport and always follow how ISU's doing and want the team to be number one. That said, what shocks me is the fact an ISU legend and icon is leaving so suddently. I know it's almost impossible to turn down such a huge pay raise, but my question is...

Why didn't Cael at least give ISU a chance to counter PSU's offer? If he loves ISU as much as he says he does, why wouldn't he at least listen to a counter offer? That, to me, speaks volumes about his true feeling for the ISU athletics department/administration.

    Not good.

He very likely did give ISU that chance...from news reports, he and Pollard had been talking about the PSU offer for the past week. I just don't think ISU has the money to counter that kind of an offer.

Let's see. Cael made $134 - highest paid coach in wrestling.

Penn State offers $500/year - Yeap, I'm leaving.

ISU just needs to find a better coach and Win the NATIONAL TITLE - next year. Everyone is back off a team that was AWSOM.

You must not of heard Cael saying he is planning on taking some of his current players. I have a feeling we won't be that awesome next year.

I am sorry but i have not sifted through all of the threads and links yet. Can someone link the comments from Cael saying he is taking players? Not saying he did not say it, I'd just like to see/read it for myself. Thanks.

Has he really said that? If so, the little respect I still had left for the guy is now gone.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

My son lives in PA. He is an avid ISU fan, but 1) PSU has plenty of money 2) They recently built a wrestling bldg., second to none 3) Cael has been doing wrestling clinics there for several years & last year they had over 600 applicants & had to turn many away 4) What competition will he have locally for the top wrestlers? Don't be mad at JP or Cael. It was very difficult but he honestly feels it an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

I guess for $500/year, you need immediate results. I figured our Great Recruiting class was going to get wiped out.

Well, it was a Nice Run while it lasted. (3) Big 12 Titles, but we were still the 2nd best team in the State. Iowa Kicked our Butt every time we wrestled them (Duals, Midlands, National Duals, Nationals).

I would like to know this as well. If he actually said that, aside from his brother, may the door hit him as he leaves. I could see personal reasons for him wanting to bring his brother along.

ISU shouldn't release any of these guys, that will pretty much guarantee that next years seniors will stay.

    Not good.
My feelings exactly. I would be shocked if this didn't boil down to personal differences between Cael and Pollard.

Both of them have offered one lame reason for leaving, namely that recruiting to Penn State will be easier. That is bull **** for two reasons. The first is that ISU is a top 5 wrestling school and has much more tradition than Penn State. Our recruiting was doing just fine, and we were competing for national championships. The second is that Cael is a competitor, and would not be one to run away from an athletic challenge. I don't buy this face-saving excuse for one second.

The second highly speculated upon reason is money. I feel the need to point out that no one here knows for sure the terms of his contract. Everything we've seen so far is message board speculation. I would love for it to be outrageous, but I suspect when the facts come out it will be substantially less than the 500k per year that people have been speculating. I would bet that it doesn't come out to more than 200k per year in the long run. Here are a few reasons why:
    1. It does not make economic sense for Penn State to offer so much more than the going rate in a non-revenue generating sport.
    2. Cael said himself that it was not much of a pay increase.
    3. Pollard has not given any indication that we were outbid.
    4. We didn't get the chance to counteroffer. If it is about the money you entertain all offers, especially if you actually want to stay at ISU.
    5. It appears that Cael actively went out and applied for the PSU job rather than them soliciting him.

Just by process of elimination you end up at personal differences with the administration (likely Pollard). Points 4 and 5 above also affirmatively suggest that Cael was looking to get out Ames.

Re: What shocked me the most...

I don't blame Cael at all. He's got to support his family and if I had an offer that paid nearly 4 times what I was making, I'd be gone too.

As far as counteroffer by ISU, what for?? That's a silly amount of money to pay a wrestling coach. Our budget just can't support that. He's a legend, but there are other good coaches out there.

One name I haven't heard mentioned yet is Joe Hesket. A very acomplished former ISU wrestler who's an assistant at Ohio State.

I'd like us to get a coach who has a little more fire in his belly.

Re: What shocked me the most...

I was kicking this possibility around last night, so let's see how it takes.

It is well known that Cael likes forging his own path and not having success handed to him. He would rather earn it. This is completely evidenced by hearing him speak or reading his blog.

What if one of the reasons he left was simply for the challenge? He was handed the keys to a top 10 team when he took over for Douglas and made them a top 5 team that has underachieved. With Penn State he has the opportunity to build a school in to the next Iowa/Iowa State/Minnesota/Oklahoma State, etc.
