    elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

I talked to a Clone buddy today and he said that all local Cyclone clubs will be disbanded and that there will not be Cyclone outings this year. They will be replaced with a more "family friendly" event in the Des Moines area. I always really enjoyed the outings that came to Cedar Rapids every year, and wonder what the athletic program hopes to gain by this change. All I can think is that they are hoping to build a fan base from the 10-15 year olds they can attract in the family friendly events.

BTW; this guy also said that the local club also raised $10-12K to give to the athletic club.

Re: elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

From what I gather, it's being done to create a unified Cyclone club. I think the AD's office felt the off-shoot clubs, while very beneficial to both fans and ISU, couldn't accomplish as much as one big club.

Re: elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

We can't have the local Cyclone clubs competing with the NCC. As I understand it, not all of the local groups contribute the same percentage to ISU. It would be a wise move to centralize a group. However, I hope they would have some regional events across the state in order to keep the fans across the state energized.

I agree and think they will.

Re: elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

I was afraid of this happening as last year, the athletic department really put pressure on each outing to significantly increase their revenue as well as the local club's donation. I think they should create more regional events instead of creating one outing. I always enjoy talking one on one with Pete Taylor when he was in town along with the head coaches and athletic directors.

Whats wrong with having one organization, with regional events reaching out those people that participate? Id rather have all the money going into one entity, rather than several.

I believe there is always the worry about a club that does fundraising doing some wrongdoing when it came to the bookkeeping. This would reflect poorly on the university and fall back squarely on it. So the university could be held accountable for something that they didn't have tight control over its operations.

I am not against the NCC running the outings, I just don't want to see one outing during the summer as I believe they need to hold multiple regional events to connect with all of the Cyclone fan base throughout the state.

Re: elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

I agree with "bfross" and the bookkeeping issue. It would be way to easy for a not so honest member to infiltrate one of the clubs and funnel off money, but even more important than that are the NCAA rules that govern the local clubs. If a local club broke a recruiting rule, it would be considered a violation by ISU. There is significant risk of this happening, having been a local ISU club president in the recent past.

As long as they still have regional events, it can be a positive move. With a larger outing, the quality of the event might be better too, with more coaches present, better prizes, more golfers at the best ball, etc.....

I believe there will continue to be regional outings, QC, CR, DM, Sioux City, Council Bluffs, and North Iowa. The smaller towns will not have outings. It's about being unified and also being more economical with the coaches time in the summer. Some of those outings (as Iunderstand) may only draw 50 people and those will be combined.

Re: elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

Bottom line is this is about raising more funds. The athletic department believes it will be able to raise more, keep more, and avoid problems with the money by centralizing this function.

I would be shocked if they did not have regional events in Iowa and in the major metro areas outside of Iowa with large alumni bases (Minneapolis, Chicago, KC, etc.).

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

It's just another way for Pollard to get the most money from ISU supporters. Any way you look at it, right or wrong, that's the reason behind the change.

Re: elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

My dad is an officer in one of the clubs in charge of their outing, one of the bigger ones. He's been told that they don't intend to disband the clubs necessarily but that they will not send coaches to outings. The preliminary plan was something like 4 big "family friendly" events (with teh blow up helmet etc.) in Des Moines and maybe one in each quadrant of the state. Could be off on the numbers but I think that's the concept.

Re: elimination of local Cyclone Clubs

I've always enjoyed attending the events. The best part of it was getting to meet the coaches(I also shared a golf cart with Pete Taylor once which was awesome!)

I'm going to miss doing that, but I understand it's a huge liability for ISU. I hope they can replace it with an event of similar caliber.

By the way, anybody know how the I Clubs are run for Iowa? I haven't heard any of this type of noise out of their Athletic department?
