    SEALS > ninjas or pirates

Snipers had one improbable chance - Somalia- msnbc.com

No need to get political here, and I'm sure it's already been discussed, but wow.....just wow. These guys define the term elite.

My brother in law is an ex-recon Marine, and every once in a while, he sends me the results of a take down with a sniper rifle . I would say that is accurate.

It would probably be better to not post them here. Perhaps a PM is in order...

No, you don't. I go through a mental preparation process before I open some of his emails, and I do not save them.

I remember a special about the Snipers, and the mental makeup that it took to do that job. Shooting as a regular soldier, you may or may not be shooting at someone you've identified.

As the sniper, you've likely tracked this person, observed several behaviors that you'll exploit, and have to pull that trigger to kill someone that is much more personal to you than the average battlefield death. It really takes some ice water in the veins for that.

Re: SEALS > ninjas or pirates

I happen to have met the folks who currently run the Army Sniper School last fall for a project. In fact, I wrote a paper for the Center for Army Lessons Learned that will be published sometime this month. It's behind the FOUO curtain, so you need to be an ID card holder to read it, but I can link it to those who have AKO priviledges.

    https://forums.bcks.army.mil/secure/...224&lang=en-US

(Note - you may have to join the BCKS community in order to view the document - just type in your info and it should let you in, provided you have the correct AKO and BCKS permissions)

In a word, snipers are calm, well-adjusted and stable. The Army spends a lot of time evaluating personality types.

Most people who claim to have been snipers are lying, btw. No-one applies to be a sniper. No-one becomes an Army Sniper just out of training. No-one who is not a combat arms specialty is selected to be a Sniper.

According to the dudes I know, the shots in question were made ship to boat, at sea, in motion and they were all three head shots. Heads move around a lot, so that's tough to do, providing that a bullet takes time from barrel to target.

But even better, it is rumored that some of the hits were from behind light cover.

Now THAT'S lights-out shooting. Both figuratively and literally...

One of my parents best friends was a sniper in Vietnam. He is a very quiet, very introspective type of individual - extremely nice. I didn't know about his past until maybe 15+ years ago. Dad always said he told people what his duty was overseas, but would never, ever talk about it.

From what I gather however, he has some issues. Marital and family of course. Seems like maybe in the past 10 years, he has worked things out better than he and his relationships are much improved.

Anyway - point being - I can see how that may f you up.

These Special Forces are amazing people. Last year I was at a conference & had the pleasure of hearing Marcus Luttrell (Ret. Navy Seal) speak. His story & I'm sure many others are simply amazing.

His book is called Lone Survivor & is an unbelieveable story about survival & courage. I would recommend it to everyone to understand the immense training & specialization of warfare these people go through.

Afterwards, I had my picture taken with Marcus & he autographed his book for me. Thanks to all of our military personnel who fight for our freedom everyday!

Re: SEALS > ninjas or pirates

I think the subject title for this thread is wrong, it should be SEAL = Ninjas > Pirates.

Seriously though, my mouth fell open when I heard this story. Those pirates had no business taking an American captain hostage, and got what was coming to them. Spare me the details, however it was great hearing that we got one of our guys back safe and sound.
