    Road Bikes?

Thought I'd start the second bike thread of the day.

I'm starting to get into biking quite a bit, and it's time to up the quality in road bike. Any suggestions? I know these things aren't cheap, but I'm on a college student budget here, so I'm hoping for something in the $350-400 range.

Quality and $350-400 are gonna be damn near impossible to find. If you can get to the 500-600 range you might have a bit better luck.\

    Re: Road Bikes?

that will get you a decent mountain bike, but entry level road is like 699.

I'd point you towards Fuji. They are cheaper by a couple hundred compared to Trek/Giant/etc.

if it says Cannondale on it, you cant afford it.

Also do NOT get a hybred - they flat out suck. putting road slicks on a good mountain bike is far better for bumming around town

    Re: Road Bikes?

That's what I was afraid of. I was really hoping that maybe there were some decent ones out there for a decent cost, but sounds like I'm SOL.

If that is your price range you should look for used. Seriously. A lot of used bikes are in great condition and you can get a decent one for that price. New road bikes aren't like the bikes you buy your kids. For decent models expect $750-1500 depending on bells and whistles. You can go a lot higher too.

yeah, go to a bike store - figure out what size you need, then hit craislist and look for good brands.

    Re: Road Bikes?

I've been a mountain biking enthusiast for some time (there were no paved roads within hundreds of miles of where I lived in Alaska so it made road bikes impractical).

Just last weekend I purchased a Krestol Evoke carbon fibre frame road bike so I'm now planning on touring much of Western Colorado.

I can't use my new road bike though to bike into town since the county roads are all gravel. For riding into town, I still use my mountain bike.

My road bike cost way outside the range you are looking to spend.

    Re: Road Bikes?

I bought a used Trek road bike last summer for 300 bucks. I had it tuned but didn't spend any other money on it. Rode ragbrai for the first time.

    Re: Road Bikes?

SH, figure out what size you need. My neighbor picks things up down in Texas every year. Mostly they are cheap bikes but once in a while he get a trek or cannondale. He is due back next week, if I know what you are looking for it would help. Most of the stuff he has would be 10 years old, but it would be cheap.

I'm doing RAGBRAI this year with a big group, and found out quickly that what I've got now doesn't compare.

You should check out the Des Moines bike collective - they take old bikes and fix them up and resell them for like $40-60 - perfect for college.

I've done RAGBRAI quite a few times with both a slicked mountian bike and a cross. Either will work but whatever you do, dont go "cheap". Your success and enjoyment on a ride like that is very linked with how good your equipment is. You dont have to spend a fortune, just look for a used Trek or Cannondale level of bike and take it in and have a good overhaul done on it.

    Re: Road Bikes?

Get in touch with Norm Hill at Central Stores in the General Services Building by the power plant. He runs the ISU DPS bike auction every year. They auction off the confiscated bikes from around campus that don't get claimed. You have to do some scouting, but you could get a pretty nice bike for $200 - $300.
