    Whiffle ball?

A high school buddy and I were talking Saturday night and we started reminiscing about how much fun our wiffle ball tournaments were.

I was curious today, and googled whiffle ball tournaments. I was directed to the New Jersey Wiffle Ball Association and Majorleaguewhiffleball.com.

Are there any whiffle ball leagues in Iowa?

I think there is a league that plays in West Des Moines. I googled it about a month ago and one popped up. I emailed the guy and he said they were planning on having the league again starting in May.

    Re: Whiffle ball?

    Whiffle ball...oh, the memories.

When I was a young kid, we figured out a way to play whiffle ball when only two people were available. We played in a drive way (we played in a single lane drive way, as two car garages weren't in abundance in the late 1950s and early 1960s). If the hitter drove it into the street on the fly, it was a home run. If he drove it into the street on one bounce, it was a triple. If drove it to the street on two bounces, it was a double. Any other ball hit to the street was a single. If the pitcher fielded the ball before it got to the street, it was an out (he could catch it on the fly, off of the house, in the grass alongside the drive way or he could simply field a 'grounder' before it got to the street). You had to force a runner home to score a run. In other words. If you had a man on second, a double wouldn't score him, but would put runners on second and third. Another single still wouldn't score the runner, but would only load the bases.

Hours upon countless hours of fun. But back in those days, there was no such thing as video games. And there was no ESPN...only the Saturday afternoon "Game of the Week" on NBC. Does that age me or what?

    Re: Whiffle ball?

We used to play alot of wiffle ball in the back yard, but our favorite was to go out in the dried up retention pond and play rag ball. You could throw it just as hard, use real bats, but still peg people to get an out. That was a blast...

    Re: Whiffle ball?

Whiffle ball for us was lopping an end off of one of those yellow bats, stuffing it with wet newspaper, and duct-taping it back together. This gave the bat a little bit more weight and rigidity which allowed us to hit tennis balls instead. We would play backwards on a softball diamond (2nd = home, home = 2nd), and the backstop was the home run wall. Lots of fun. Now, you haven't played kickball unless you've played it on a tennis court...

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Classic. I have not even played a game of kick ball since third or fourth grade.

How about petitioning the Olympic committee and getting these sports in for the 2016 Olympics?

When I was in 4th grade they had to install a huge horizontal net on the playground so the balls wouldn't fly into the street. St. Lawrence grade school might have had the greatest collection of kickball players of all time.

    Re: Whiffle ball?

Unfortunately the days of backyard whiffle ball are being taken over by soccer. I don't see any kids in my neighborhood playing whiffle ball...they are all kicking a soccer ball, riding skateboards, or playing video games.

Great post. Of the three activities you mentioned, I would bet playing video games is at the top of the list considering childhood obesity is at epidemic proportions.

Thinking about your post, I wonder if kids today even know what the game "500" is?

I would play only if you can use that oversized bat that pretty much ensures that you bomb it. I wish I could find a link or a picture to the actual bat I am referencing. Rep. will be given to the first person who finds the picture and the name of the bat I am talking about.

I preferred the long, thin yellow whiffle ball bats. I would wrap the ends with athletic tape and my whiffle balls with athletic or electrical tape.
