    What is a sport?

Flipping back and forth between the Cavs-Celtics game and the Masters made me think - what constitutes a sport?

I have added a poll with several of the main "sports" that get airtime on TV, although feel free to write in your own. Which of these would you consider a sport, and why?

All but bowling. Golf requires excellent body control and coordination. Something I evidently do not possess.

    Re: What is a sport?

I figured I'd put my response in a separate post - I voted for all of the above except golfing and bowling (well, I meant to, although I screwed up my vote). I see these both as games, largely enjoyed by overweight, older males. I see a sport as a game that involves athleticism to be the best - something where running daily or working out improves your game. Nobody can look at the guts on Angel Cabrera or Kenny Perry, who are two of the top "athletes" in golf at the moment, and convince me that they run daily.

You forgot John Daly. If you can smoke while doing it, it's not a sport.

Just kidding, for me golf is actually right on the cutoff line, I can see arguments for both sides. While some may not consider golf a sport, there is no doubt that some of the players COUGH! tiger woods COUGH! are athletes.

I definitely don't consider bowling a sport. Just because something is on ESPN, does not make it so... Scrabble and spelling bees aren't sports. I did see Figure-Eight School Bus Racing on ESPN once, that was a cool sport.

I agree that Tiger is an athlete - you see pictures of him running all of the time. Today showed that isn't necessarily anything that helps you win in golf, though.

Your last paragraph reminded me to add racing to the poll. Sorry if it affected anyone's votes - it did not mine, but it may others.

    Re: What is a sport?

You don't have to be athletic to qualify to play a sport.

I can certainly add it - I was going off of the professional sports for the options.

    Power lifters have guts too...
Just because an activity doesn't require aerobic activity doesn't mean it's not a sport.

Golf is certainly a "skill" sport, but I think it's a sport, though it's very borderline.

Motorsports, on the other hand, I don't really think of as sports (and I'm as big of a motorsport fan as there is).

    Re: What is a sport?

I think basketball, football, and hockey are sports. It requires a lot of athleticism. One can drink and not pay a whole lot of attention and still do well bowling and golfing. Baseball is borderline a sport. From Babe Ruth to The Roid Era, if you can swing a bat and hit the ball out, you can be a good player without having to be able to run.

I of course am being somewhat facetious.

Perhaps the one "sport" in which the professional version of it would make you say no to it being a sport but the amateur version would probably qualify.

I see golf as a game of skill (like croquet or chess), since there is little to no athleticism involved. My comment about the guts was not to point out the lack of aerobic activity - it was to point out that there is little in the way of actual movement involved.

If you can drink a beer and ride in a cart between holes, that seems to be more of a pasttime to me. I walk more than that when I go to the mall.

    Re: What is a sport?

To me a sport is anything that you think anyone could due with a little practice but in reality you cant come close to competing with the best.

Curling during the winter olympics is not a sport. Horseshoes not a sport.

Cool Re: What is a sport?

Since this is the definition of sport:

Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.

Everything on your list is a sport. AND GOLF IS DEFINATELY A SPORT!
