    jason scales

why wasn't he utilized very well at ISU? I watched him play in high school and this kid was for real (A Parade All American). You can't use the "he wasn't good enough" argument because the kid was going to ISU of all places. Its not like he was at USC. Unfortunately, his eligibility is up and Iowa State lost out.

Injuries.. injuries... injuries. After that he clearly lacked playmaking ability. One heck of a blocker though.

Scales is as good of a kid as you could want on your football team.

    Re: jason scales

Probably the 50,000 knee injuries he had from high school through his years at ISU. Just gonna throw that out there. Speaking of which, what happened to Blake Larsen at Iowa? That kid was the real deal in high school, then he just fizzled out at Iowa, pity.

Who are you? There are only so many carries a back can have, each back is different. For Jason his carries were used up in HS.

    Re: jason scales

For the most part, he was continually injured. Seemed like right about the time the kid would get healthy, he'd go down again. Only got enough time in to burn up that eligibility.

But I mentioned last year that I thought Chizlick should've played Jason in a double back formation with ARob. I thought he'd excel in a pseudo-fullback role. He had good, but not great speed. I think was considered our best blocking back. And by his senior year, was built like a tank.

    Re: jason scales

thats why i think Valley is dumb not to play the really good players both ways. If they had played Scales as an OLB, he could have had a second choice position, if he didn't get the RB position.

and if the players on the other side of the ball were better than he was at any of those positions, you sit them so he can play worse than they would have?

great person, but he lacked the ability after multiple serious knee problems. he just lost the explosiveness he had in HS... unfortunate, but he gave everything he had. it wasnt that he was poorly utilized as you think, he just got unlucky

At least nobody has suggested that he repay his scholarship yet.

I hear that one at least once a week at work.

    Re: jason scales

And he gained quite a few more lbs at ISU than he did at Valley, so the mobility wasnt there. He had Austin Arnaud/Brandon Wegher type skill hype.

    Re: jason scales

5'8" is not the prototype LB'er. Scales is a great guy, got a opportunity to hang out with him a time or two in Ames when he first got there. Smart enough to know his role and get a first class education while giving his all on the football field for the team, not himself.

Others have mentioned the injuries which was a major factor.

Another is that high school accomplishments mean very little. You said that you watched Scales in high school. I would be willing to bet that you could count on one hand (and not use all the fingers) the number of opponents who ended up being legitimate D1 players. It's one thing to look impressive against a team with 16 & 17 year olds who will never get a sniff from college recruiters. It's another thing to go against a group of 20 plus year olds whose weakest link is better than the best that you faced in high school.
