Big Weekend Away for Cyclone Hockey

The biggest weekend of Cyclone Hockey's season is finally upon us. So much is on the line when the #6 Cyclones take on the top ranked team in the nation. It just so happens to also be their biggest rival.

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini have been the most despised team to ever step foot on ice against the Cyclones. The All-Time series is very close, with the Clones holding a slight edge. You better believe that history plays into this one.

Last season the Cyclones Beat Illinois for the first time in 3 seasons. But it was Illinois who defeated the Cyclones in both the Conference and National Tournaments. Bad blood runs wild between these two teams, especially after the Illini ended the Cyclones season last year.

Both teams are without their head coaches due to the World University Games. Illinois will also be short 5 players from last semester's roster. Four are in Italy and 1 is ineligible for the game. However, Illinois has incredible depth and outstanding goaltending.

While the Cyclones are without Junior Standout, Allen Raushel (also in Italy), they showed last week that they can step up in big situations. The Cyclones will also be without Mike Paulsen who suffered a season threatening injury to his shoulder. But while the Illini are deep, the Cyclones feel they are even deeper.

The Rookies have played like veterans over the Cyclones current 6 game winning streak, so expect them to step up in a big way. You can also look to Jayson Peterson (37 pts.) and Jason Brown (34 pts.) to continue their dominant performance this season as they have had success against Illinois in the past. Mike Murtaugh (Last week's Player of the Week with 6 pts over the weekend against Western Michigan), is also poised for a big game. He is currently wearing the "A" for assistant captain in Raushel's absence.

It should be exciting to see what happens this weekend as Interim Coach Brian Wilkie has some tricks up his sleeve for the Illini. If you are in the Champagne area, you won't want to miss this. But if your stuck in Ames and you want to keep up with the Clones, just go to our FREE live Webcast of the game at our website below. It's gonna be a classic out there, so don't miss any of the great Cyclone Hockey Action!

Both Games this weekend Friday and Saturday begin at 7 PM. Webcast begins at 6:45!

Re: Big Weekend Away for Cyclone Hockey

I've been to Champaign for the ISU-Illinois hockey games...it was a great time. The year I went (2003 I think) we got blown out both nights, but was still a great atmosphere...I wish our rink had the kind of aura theirs had.

    Good luck and GO STATE!

Re: Big Weekend Away for Cyclone Hockey

Sorry, but Cy Passes don't get you into Cyclone Hockey. We do have cheap tickets though, so make sure you stop by and check out a game. There are plenty of great ones left to choose from this year.

On the note about the rowdy fans at Illinois. It's really going to be something else to see/hear tomorrow. I can't wait. It's going to be a mad house, but the players are ready to roll. I can tell you that they are extremely pumped.

In addition to the FanAddict Club outing and getting a dollar off for wearing gold, Cyclone Alley members can also get $1 off for wearing their Cyclone Alley shirts on January 26. It should be a great game. As should the game on Jan. 27 at Wells Fargo.

Re: Big Weekend Away for Cyclone Hockey

The Cyclones lost again last night 3-0 but played a hard game against a very tough team. They had trouble with the size of the Illinois ice. The rink was originally for speedskating and is not only larger than NHL ice but also wider than international standards.

Interim Head Coach Brian Wilkie pulled the goalie with five minutes in the game and the Cyclones had numerous chances and prevented Illinois from scoring again but were unable to score themselves. They played extremely well both games, although the final scores may not reflect that.

Also in last night's game was a huge scrap between Iowa State freshman phenom Pete Majkozak and Illini defender Pat Mannina. Fighting is outlawed in the league but the linesmen really had no idea what to do and let them fight for 30 seconds to a minute. The game was on tape so with any luck the clip will be up on YouTube later this week.

Make sure to catch the Cyclones this coming weekend against Oklahoma!
