Key Quotes from the Des Moines Register

Mike Taylor "We got what we put into it. We felt the loss to Kansas – because we stayed in the game – we felt comfortable with that"
Rashon Clark "We were pointing fingers. We thought we could just play like how we played against Kansas".
Instead of being comfortable why not give the same effort and win the next game?
Coach McDermott: "Why wouldn’t you play hard when you have an opportunity to play in a college basketball game is beyond me. Obviously we were pretty proud of our past accomplishments, and didn’t show up with the effort, the focus, or the intensity that we needed to beat any team, let alone a team on the road in the Big 12".
Exactly, couldn’t have said it any better myself.

I thought the same thing about those quotes when I read them

“One day we’ll be in here celebrating a Big 12 championship,” Rhoads said. “That I can promise you.”

"I hope to coach here until I retire," Hoiberg said.

Sometimes planes need grounded. This team was flying too high.

A win last night and against K-State this weekend could have really inflated their heads beyond recognition. Then back-to-back road games at OSU and A&M could've been very, very ugly.

We might look back at this one and say "it wasn't all that bad we lost it".

G-Mac will be able to use that game all year long.

I disagree. In my opinion it is never good to lose or to justify a loss or to be accepting of losing.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Can you quote where I said "it was good we lost" or "I accept this loss"?

Read the words on the screen please.

Clearly this team thought they could win just because they're 2-1 in Big 12 play. What do you think they'd be like if they came home at 3-1? Or went on the road at 4-1?

Teams learn by winning. Good coached teams learn even more by losing. We saw that with losses to Bradley, UNI, OSU, etc. That's gotta be one of the reasons Jiri is playing much better - he finally saw (with G-Mac's help of course) what he was doing was hurting the team.

I hate losing more than just about anyone else. Yet I can also recognize it as a teaching tool.

Re: Key Quotes from the Des Moines Register

I think they were just regurgitating what they were told in the post game by the coaches.

Not necessarily what they went in to the game feeling. It's just the way the played. Not an attitude.

Ever notice how in the post game inteviews all the players have the same sound bites, use the same words? GMac had almost the exact quote as Taylor in his post game with John Walters. At least the boys are listening.

And Mike and Rashon are not necessarily wrong ... they should be comfortable with the effort against Kansas. It was a great level and if they would've put it out there last night that game would've been over at halftime. Problem is they clearly didn't. And in the long run it won't be enough to sit tight, won't help in Austin, Lawrence, Stillwater, Manhattan, Lincoln - and might not be enough in Ames a few times.

And ISUfan22 is right. Losses suck - nobody thinks otherwise. It's not a moral victory - they hardly ever exist. But sometimes they can be good in it opens some eyes, knocks some heads. Want a better example, IMO? How about the Drake loss in 2000? Think that got the attention of a few guys named Fizer, Tinsley, Johnson, Nurse, Horton? Losses blow chunks, but sometimes it's what it takes - especially with young players ...

My guess would be b/c he was getting his butt kicked downlow in the second half. He got pushed aside and let his guy get 3 offensive boards. Good first half but wasn't near as physical in the 2nd

What have you done for me today guards? Nothing. Forwards and centers? You have kept my spirits up. If I see another set of bomber threes at a start of a game, I will be violently sick. You have to work the ball around to deserve a bucket from what I saw last night.

I did read them. If "We might look back at this one and say "it wasn't all that bad we lost it"." is not trying to justify a loss then I don't know what is.

I think you should study up on some of the great coaches...I don't think any great coach likes to lose so he can teach his team a lesson. Maybe some of the marginal or poor coaches use this technique...but not the great ones.

Using your logic, a team with 20-25 losses in a season would have really "learned" a lot...more than a team with 20-25 wins.

And frankly it would be great to be 3-1 or 4-1 because we would then be at or near the top of the conference standings...I see nothing wrong with that.

Clearly you don't get my point. Of course coaches don't like to lose. No one does.

Yet ask any good coach when some of the best teaching lessons are learned. I've asked this question of a number of coaches - have you?

I've been cautious about this team all along. I'm not sure we're as good as our record indicates - even though it's not a great record.

Re: Key Quotes from the Des Moines Register

I think the loss for this team is a good teaching tool. This team has the potential to be fairly decent. Good coaches will hold it over teams heads all season long after tough losses to good opponents or when the team is reeling off lots of wins to remind them, this is what happens when you let your guard down to an inferior opponent. If the team gets hot, hopefully Greg will reflect back to this game to keep the team at a high level of energy.

If you are really as good as you think you are then you need to go out, execute, and put your foot down on the weaker opponents like CU.

CU won last night because ISU never got their act together and never tried to deliver a blow to CU and knock them out of the game. A team like that would have folded if they started to get down early or big late.
