Re: Cotlar at 1700AM The Champ

Updates. That's a good fit for Larry.

    Hope they don't pre-empt Mike & Mike.

I don't find Larry to be a particularly good on-air personality. But you have to admit he gets alot of quality interviews. He'd probably make and excellent program manager or something.

From reading the article, it looks like 1700 is more interested in local afternoon programming. IMO, they realize how solid Mike & Mike and the Herd are, but since Dan Patrick left, it's been a revolving door of hosts on ESPN Radio.

Maybe they could put him on from 9-12 every night to help people get to sleep.

I actually think it would be pretty good radio to get him and Marty to do a show together considering their recent history.

He does have a lot of contacts and those are great. It is not great, however, how he leads all of these great contacts back to Drake basketball or how he changes his opinion based on what his guest thinks.

Larry would probably do best on a show that is only an hour or two hours.

Interesting. Similar to my feelings regarding the current afternoon guy at the other station.

Does Gottlieb troll hawkeyenation to tell you like it is?

Agreed. He gets the names on the air, but falls rather short on the actual interview.

Larry just isn't a confrontational type. It's who he is and that's fine. And it's great for the feel good interviews where he has a big-name on the air, who just wants to talk about the glory days.

But if there's an actual issue, or tries to talk about the current events of a local team - he doesn't take a side or ask the hard hitting question. More often, he kind of panders to the guest and it ends up not worth listening to.

Re: Cotlar at 1700AM The Champ

I think Cotlar's tenure in Des Moines has run it's course. It wuld be nice to get some new blood on a show or two. I think that there should be a cyclone counterpart to pair with Jon Miller to keep him in check and off his soapbox. That would be a good start!

Re: Cotlar at 1700AM The Champ

I'm happy for Larry. I don't think he deserved to get fired from KXnO. In addition, he gets great quality interviews and he's a positive personality. Local competition will be good for the quality of sports radio in our marketplace.
