I understand the land for the new BBall practice facility was donated. That sounds good, but with that said, why is this "way off campus site" a good thing for the BB programs? What happened to the proposal to build the practice facility directly next/south of Hilton? It seems awkward to shuttle student athletes way out to west Ames. Convince me this is a good idea. If I'm a big time recruit, why is this off campus facility a selling point? Our men's basketball program is sliding big time and I'm perlexed as to why this is a good thing.

"Way out to west Ames" takes no more than 5 minutes to get to from campus. I don't see it as a big deal. We're building a brand new practice facility on donated land, but you can't see why it is a good thing?

First, I've never understood why it was such a big deal that the land was donated. ISU has plenty of land where they could build the same building closer to Hilton. This one has perplexed me, but I don't agree that it will be a negative.

The reason it is not connected to Hilton, is because of money. To try to add that big of a facility onto Hilton would have cost way to much. The estimated cost from the original Hilton plans was around $40 million, in contrast to the $8 million this is costing them.

Now, they won't be shuttling athletes out there. Most BB players have cars and many of the athletes live on that side of town, and the few that might not, can take the bus which they can ride for free.

I don't think the location will be that big of an issue.

The players can get apartments out that directions, some do currently. So it would actually be closer than Hilton/etc.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

This facility will be right in the backyard of a lot of players.

Supposedly the athletes will have access to the practice facility at all hours. Having it located near where many of them live (nearby apartments) could be viewed as a convenience. Plus the lower costs means we have a practice facility years sooner than waiting on the required fund raising.

Athletes would have access to it all hours no matter where it was built. We have just been arguing that it being on the west side means nothing because it isn't that far away, so the other would also be true.

What I think happened is that someone came to the AD and said, "I can build you a facility for 8 million that will have all the necessary features" and the JP could not say no to a 30 million savings. I wouldn't be surprised if a new practice facility attached to Hilton still remains in the works for years to come.

Well it could be done right away, recruits eliminate colleges that don't have decent facilities and it would save ISU around $8M (although an on campus facility would have cost more).

Building onto Hilton would have been expensive and the orginal plans had a volleyball court in the practice facility. Just looked it up, the orginal plans have the cost at 25 million, so this is saving the AD 17 million.

Hence why the land was donated, Jensen owns the majority of those apartments out there. My guess is he also gave money to the project.
