    Rockall to transfer

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman Claire Rockall has decided to return to Ireland to continue her education and basketball career, ISU head coach Bill Fennelly announced Friday. Rockall will finish out the spring semester at ISU before going home.

“I’ve had a great experience here, but I’ve decided to continue my education and playing career in Ireland,” Rockall said. “It’s been tough being away from my family and friends this year. I’m very thankful to everyone who has helped me here, but I feel like this is the right decision for me at this time.”

She played 94 minutes last year and had 6 points.

That is probably the reason Bill has been looking at the JC for a guard.

Out of all the freshmen, her leaving will be the easiest to handle. It is unlikely she would have ever started.

BF still had a scholarship left before Rockall decided to transfer, now he has two and he will have another 5 to fill next year. He will differently fill one of these still this year.

    Re: Rockall to transfer

    Before it happens:

Someone makes a snarky comment about the similarities to the men's defections.
    Someone hops in defending Fennelly.
A mild argument about the men's program happens.
Everyone wants to get back to how awesome Fennelly is.

That's this thread before it happens. :)

    Re: Rockall to transfer

I'm still confused why Rockall was even offered a scholarship. She has very limited skills - certainly not NCAA Div. I caliber.

    Re: Rockall to transfer

I think Claire was more of a project, and we had an open scholly. She played for Ireland's national team so she obviously has some skills that the coaching staff saw. The transition from the international game to the American collegiate game is harder than the average fan realizes...and I think it took a while for Claire to adjust. There was an article written about her coming to the states and adjusting to our game. She's a great person (know her personally), and should do well back in Ireland.

Sending nothing but good luck her way.

"Project" is probably correct. Coach Fennelly often said throughout the year that she was perhaps the best raw athlete on the team, but needed to learn DI basketball.

Don't forget that schollies are not nearly as tight in women's bball, I think you get 15.

She was recruited based upon a recommendation of Mary Fox. Mary was playing pro ball in Ireland when she saw Claire play.
