    Baylor's Drew to Memphis?

Heard on FSR this morning that Scott Drew is one of the leading candidates to replace Calipari at Memphis. Seriously, that's the best they can do? I know their conference isn't the greatest, but that didn't seem to hold them back much the last few years. I gotta think they could do a little better than Drew.

I guess they looked at Floyd and Pearl, who have both decided to stay put, so who knows. Anyone else hear anything about this?

His connection to that #1 recruit is probably a big reason they would look at him.

    Re: Baylor's Drew to Memphis?

First I've heard about it. While Memphis has been successful over the last several years, what made Memphis successful was Calipari who was there in the first place to resurrect his career after the disaster with the Nets (and resurrect he did). Considering that Memphis still plays in CUSA I think they're going to have problems trying to hire a top-of-the-line coach unless it's one in Calipari's situation, trying to rebuild his career.

That being said, I think Drew and Memphis would be good for each other. Even though Memphis is CUSA and CUSA < Big XII, still Memphis > Baylor. Even at CUSA Memphis gets greater visibility than Baylor does. Do I think Drew would have the same kind of success that Calipari had at Memphis? Maybe, maybe not. But I think it would be much more sustainable success than Drew ever could have at Baylor.

Let's see. Big 12 conference. Recruit the state of Texas OR Conference USA and play against Southern Miss

I know Memphis has been dominate lately but this would be a backwards move for Drew. They got lucky that they were able to get Calipari when he fell from the NBA.

They aren't going to get a big name to Memphis. Drew is about they level they should shoot for IMO.

Is memphis a good job??? I would say no. I wouldn't leave Baylor. I like having drew in our conference because I think he is soft. He should stay and I hope he stays.

Who coached Memphis before Calipari? Seems like they fell off the map somewhere soon after dropping "State" from their name.

    Re: Baylor's Drew to Memphis?

I'd probably make the move from Baylor to Memphis if I were Drew, but there is no way a top 10 or even 20 coach in the BCS conferences makes that move.

Targeting Drew is a good strategy because I think they can get him.

IMO Drew would be crazy not to go to Memphis. BU fans are patient but with losing all those seniors this year and missing the tourney his seat will get hot soon enough.

    Re: Baylor's Drew to Memphis?

Memphis is good because of Calipari, not because there is a tradition of winning. A bum coach to a supposedly good school doesn't work. Should coaches leave because their seniors are leaving? All coaches would leave every year. Baylor has good players left and they have a real good recruiting class coming in. Memphis is nothing without calipari. Baylor may be nothing but the don't have to be. They are in Texas in the big 12. We are being contradictory, Iowa State is a horrible job by most of your accounts.

Really? They have been to 3 Final Fours, 6 Elite 8's, and the Sweet 16 11 times. How many Big 12 schools can match that?

2 of the Final Fours and 7 of the Sweet 16's occured when Cal wasn't there as well.

That's correct. They have a loooooong tradition of winning. They were a major power back in the old Metro Conference days, along with Louisville.

Are you serious? Memphis was in the finals last year, they have been a 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA tournament for the past 4 years, and they have put several players in the NBA. That's more than 90% of the programs out there.

Plus they are willing to pay a truckload of money.

    It's a good job, IMO.
