    Weekend snowstorm?

Look's like it's going to be our turn this weekend

    http://www.weather.gov/view/prodsByS...ype=discussion

OVERNIGHT FRI NIGHT INTO SAT MORNING
PANHANDLE LOW WILL DEEPEN AND BEGIN TO HEAD SLOWLY ENE BY SAT AFTERNOON. AT THIS TIME...WARM SECTOR APPEARS TO REMAIN SOUTH OF THE REGION. BOTH GFS AND GEM HAVE SYSTEM TRANSLATING ACROSS NORTHERN MO BY SAT EVENING WITH THE 12Z EURO SOLN A BIT FARTHER TO THE NW.
THOUGH STILL A DAY AWAY...MODELS HAVE TENDED TO BACKTRACK TO THE NW WITH THE TRACK OF THE PREVIOUS FEW SYSTEMS. FOR NOW...AM LEANING A BIT MORE WITH THE EURO TRACK. UKMET ALSO SUPPORTS FARTHER NW TRACK.
FOR THE DAY ON SAT...STRONGER THETAE ADVECTION HEADS LATE IN THE DAY WITH EXPANDING SHIELD OF OVER RUNNING PRECIP ACROSS THE NORTH AND SCT AREAS OF RAIN/THUNDER IN THE SOUTH. ATTM...MAINLY LOOKS TO BE ELEVATED CONVECTION ALONG THE FRONT WITH BETTER CHANCES FOR SFC BASED SVR SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF THE FORECAST AREA. WILL NEED TO WATCH THE NORTHWARD ADVANCEMENT OF THE WARM FRONT SAT NIGHT. AS WITH PREVIOUS RUNS...A MORE PRONOUNCED DEF ZONE AND TROWAL WILL DEVELOP
LATER SAT NIGHT AND SUNDAY NORTHWEST WITH COLD AIR GETTING INTO THE SYSTEM AS IT LIFTS TO THE NORTHEAST. THOUGH ONE SFC FEATURE GRADUALLY FILLS AS IT LIFTS TO THE NORTHEAST OVER IL...A SECOND SFC LOW TRIES TO FORM WEST CLOSER TO KBRL AND PROLONGS THE SNOWFALL
ACROSS IOWA. SOME HINT OF BENT BACK OCCLUSION...TOO WHICH WILL ENHANCE SFC WINDS BEHIND THE SYSTEM ON SUNDAY. MAY BE 3 TO 6 HOURS OF RATHER NASTY WX IN THE AFTERNOON. WITH THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS
NOW LEANING TOWARD CHANGEOVER ON SUNDAY...QPF AND TIMING CONSIDERATIONS POINTING TO A REGION OF 3 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW FOR THE FORECAST AREA. SUFFICIENT UNCERTAINTY REMAINS FOR PLACEMENT SO WILL NOT TRY TO GIVE DETAILS NOW. 00Z GFS A BIT MORE OMINOUS THAN
THE EURO/UKMET CONSENSUS BUT BOTH SCENARIOS POINT TOWARD RATHER WINDY CONDITIONS WITH EXIT OF STORM. GIVEN ALL OF THIS...NEXT COUPLE OF RUNS/PACKAGES WILL HAVE TO FOCUS HEAVILY ON HEADLINE CHALLENGES
AS POTENTIAL NOW EMERGING FOR A QUICK HITTING LATE SEASON EVENT ON SUNDAY. SUNDAY SHOULD SEE NON DIURNAL TRENDS WITH FALLING TEMPS AND A RETURN TO ANOTHER BELOW NORMAL PERIOD THROUGH MONDAY.

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL IOWA.

    .DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

NO HAZARDOUS WEATHER IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

A SIGNIFICANT LATE SEASON STORM WILL BRING SCATTERED NON SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS BY LATE SATURDAY TO SOUTHERN IOWA. THUNDERSTORMS ARE
EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE FOR SATURDAY NIGHT AND EARLY
SUNDAY MORNING SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 80.

THE SAME WEATHER SYSTEM WILL AFFECT THE STATE SUNDAY WITH THE POTENTIAL
FOR ADDITIONAL SNOW. AT THIS TIME IT IS TOO EARLY TO DETERMINE HOW
MUCH SNOW MAY FALL WITH THE SYSTEM THOUGH MODERATE SNOW ACCUMULATIONS
MAY OCCUR OVER PORTIONS OF THE OUTLOOK AREA ALONG WITH INCREASING
NORTH WINDS. IF MODERATE SNOWFALL DOES OCCUR...TRAVEL MAY BE IMPACTED
SUNDAY AFTERNOON OVER THE OUTLOOK AREA.

    Re: Weekend snowstorm?

Not buying it until I see it...there's been snow in the forecast for everyday this week at some point and none of it added up to more than a dusting.

I love how we only get about 4 months of guaranteed snow-free weather in Iowa these days.

    I say it's 5 and not 4, but who's counting.

    Winter's Revenge?

Storm over the weekend went from intriguing to massive snowstorm(for the northern half anyways. The interesting lines from the NWS. Will be all about the temperatures in my opinion.

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR THE NORTHWEST HALF OF THE FORECAST AREA
FROM 00Z SUNDAY TO 00Z MONDAY. HAVE HIGH CONFIDENCE IN SNOWFALL
TOTALS OVER 6 INCHES ACROSS MUCH OF THE WATCH REGION AND POTENTIAL
IS THERE FOR 8-14 INCHES. WILL NOT USE THE BLIZZARD HEADLINES YET
THIS FAR OUT BUT WILL HEAVILY WORD IT IN THE TEXT AND CONTINUE TO
MONITOR. ALSO THE TRACK OF THE SYSTEM MAY DICTATE A SHIFT NORTH OR
SOUTH OF THE WATCH. HPC WWD WOULD SUGGEST 6 TO 8 INCHES WOULD EXTEND
ANOTHER 2 TIERS OF COUNTIES SOUTH SO WILL NEED TO KEEP THAT
    POTENTIAL IN MIND.

Oppps missed the other thread...please merge

    Re: Weekend snowstorm?

Any of you guys have a good idea of what to expect in DSM on Sunday around 1pm? I am supposed to take off from the airport around then and am getting a little PO'd by the current warning of 8-14 inches w/ 45mph winds in parts of central Iowa.
