I dont think its too early. I however would put down a fertilizer with crabgrass preventer. I am putting mine down today. I think its tough to beat Scott's products.

I agree. Last year I waited too long and spent all summer battling weeds. I used a preemergent Scotts with crabgrass preventer last Sunday.

    Re: Weed & Feed

Go to Scotts.com. Create yourself an account (probably don't have to). But they allow you to put in all your specs for your lawn (location, type, shade, etc) and it will tell you what to use and when. You can even sign up for email reminders.

I personally think it's a bit early. You want to make sure the ground is soft enough for whatever to disolve and soak in, not get a heavy April rain and just run-off. I'll proabably put mine down in a week or two. We have trees allover the yard, so I like to get a powerrake and get all the dug in leaves and old growth out, overseed and fertilize all at the same time. Don't want to do that until it's warm enough for the seeds to germinate.

    Re: Weed & Feed

Correct me if I'm wrong about this...but what I've read is that crabgrass preventer works great as long as you don't break the soil surface later. So if you are going to aerate or rake the yard, you should do it prior to the crabgrass preventer. The preventer creates a surface barrier for crabgrass and breaking the surface after applied creates an opening for the crabgrass to take hold.

I think that is true. And that's my fix. If I rake & seed now, I supposedly can't lay down regular crabgrass preventer for something like 6-8 weeks - as it will hamper the germination and growth of the new seed. That puts me into late May or even June - which is obviously too late for pre-emergent.

I need a special mix (Step one for new seed w/ crabgrass preventer). So I rake & clean that up, overseed and lay that stuff down. I've never tried it before, hope it works.

I don't have a huge crabgrass problem. Overall, the yard is too shady. But it's nasty in the sunny spots, out along the curb and sidewalks. I do have alot of clover-type growth in some spots, and some sort of broadleaf that pops up mostly in my back yard - but spot spraying keeps that in check.

Same problem here. I'm waiting on my Aeration company. They haven't even started yet this spring. So I can't my preventer until post aeration. And I can't put down over seed until several weeks after preventer.

We are only 1 year into new sod and it was crappy sod that didn't take well in the first place. I was really hoping to kick start this spring and get some good rooting going.

Anyone have suggestions on the order of all of this?

    Re: Weed & Feed

I'd wait one more week. We are going to get some weather through on Sunday and it's still cool outside.

The sooner you put it down, the sooner you'll have to mow.

    Re: Weed & Feed

If you are putting fertilizer down now, put just fertilizer down and wait to put crabgrass preventor down to closer to May 1st if you are in Iowa. You can do it sooner if further south but you are wasting it putting it down now. Right now the soil temp in Iowa is around 40 degrees. Most grasses don't come out of dormancy or germinate in the case of new seeding till we hit soil temps of 52-56 degrees. However, crabgrass does not germinate until we get closer to 80 degrees so I would wait until May 1st or later to put down the crabgrass preventer. It only lasts for a certain amount of time so putting it down might use up it's usefullness before the soil temps do reach 80 degrees.

I usually get the "packaged" deal with fertilizer and crabgrass preventer in 1 bag. Do you think applying them separately is the best approach over the combined product?
