    Digital Camera - Best Buy

I received a $150 gift card from Best Buy. (So, please no comments on don't buy at best buy or I hate best buy....)

I need a digital camera. I can spend $150 - $200. I am going to Germany on 4/18 and need a good camera. Would like image stabilization, a good battery length, a good zoom (if someone can explain optical v digital that would be great).

Any advice would be great. I don't want to spend over $200....

My only advice is to ignore digital zoom. This is the same as using photoshop on your computer to make objects bigger. It just distorts the images.

Most of the Canon Powershots are great selections.

Ugh. Glass > body. You'll be much happier if you invest the same amount or more in your glass as you do your camera body. For many, the glass is an afterthought which is really not a good idea.

True. Don't completely ignore digital zoom, but optical zoom is far more important. So is IS.

we have a $250 Kodak ... works like a charm. It kinda sucks with "action" photos... the pics at my nieces v-ball game all look like it blurs even in "sports" mode. I hear you need the spendy version to improve that.

I'd ask what the software is like ... we have a Nikon that absolutely sucked downloading the pics. Just really complicated and not really useful. The Kodak has been an improvement.

With your gift card, you can a pretty decent Sony camera, and spend $50-100 out-of-pocket. We spent about $200 for ours, if I remember correctly.

Canon and Sony solid values and solid cameras. I dont' travel abroad but you may have to get a camera that uses replaceable (and not a battery cartridge) batteries. Not sure the charger works over there. (someone help me)

Fwiw...I (my wife) let our Canon fall out of her pocket while 4 wheeling at the farm this winter. I went back a week later and was lucky enough to find it. It still works. It fell on snowpack that melted and then laid on the dirt in the field. No problems whatssoever.

I have been happy w/ our Canon SD500. 7.1 MP...owned it for 3.5 yrs. Its compact enough for trips to fit in your pocket. Battery life is good/rechargeable. USB cord connection to your computer. I believe one at this level is now in your price range. It was closer to $500 when I bought it.

You can buy a pretty good digital camera for $200 anymore. You can buy a decent one for $150. If I were you, I'd buy a $150 camera, and spend another $50 on accessories (spare battery, memory, case).

Also, you need to buy the Euro power plug adapter for the recharger or laptop, it changes the plug formation from 2 flat blades to round pins. Todays transformers that come w/ electronics are usually 50Hz compatible.

And if you have not spend some time on a site such as dpreview.com to educate yourself - you'd be doing yourself an injustice. Not just on camera selection, but how to operate it as well.

You can get a simple adapter for the outlets over there. We got ours for a trip to Egypt, Israel, and Jordan. Our package included different options, one of which was Germany.

That's a good point, though, and definitely something to look at getting. If you're taking a computer or anything, you'd want something like that.

Re: Digital Camera - Best Buy

Digital zoom is pointless, so just ignore that. What it is doing is cropping the picture in camera and then enlarging those pixels. You can do the same thing and get the same quality in postprocessing with photoshop or picasa.

I'm a Canon guy, so I'll recommend any of the powershot series. The A590IS would be in your price range, and is a pretty decent camera, all things considered.

I really like the SDxxx series of cameras, though, because the form factor is awesome, and they take really decent pictures. Attached is a picture from my 5 year old SD450. The SD790IS or SD1100IS would probably be in your price range.

And don't let people be camera snobs towards you. I've seen people take horrible pictures with 3 thousand dollar bodies and 2 thousand dollar lenses, and great photographers take great pictures with 100 dollar point and shoots.

It's one of those "archer not the arrow" things these days.

Plus you don't really want to be lugging around a huge, heavy SLR when you travel, just to take marginally better pictures than you can with a decent point and shoot.
