Thank god for Bill Fennelly and Christi Johnson

Can you imagine the doom and gloom without their accomplishments this past year? I know it is not the big sports right now having the success, but at least we have something to be very proud of right now. I really think with the new practice facility for basketball and the national exposure we are getting right now that recruiting for women's basketball is going to explode. I predict that Fennelly will go to a Final Four before he retires from ISU. It might even be this year! Also, if we can find a way to keep one of the big schools from taking Christi away from us she will go to a Final Four also in the near future.

Amen. And if you watch the post-game locker room speech Fennelly gave the girls last night, you'll know that him and his staff are teaching them about more than the game of basketball. I hope other coaches are doing the same. The post-game speech from last year after the Rutgers game still blows my mind how he can take a loss and turn it into a positive message about life.

And Cael Sanderson. #3 in the nation is nothing to sneeze at. This is not to take anything away from Fennelly and Johnson.

Right. Without these 3 programs, there would be nothing good going on in ISU athletics.

Can people just celebrate the victory and accomplishment without using it as ammunition to take shots at the other programs, coaches and players?

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

    I think that's exactly what's going on here...celebrating something good. :)

I noticed this in 2 threads already. I think you could probably cut and paste it everywhere and it would be appropriate. This was a great win!

Re: Thank god for Bill Fennelly and Christi Johnson

I certainly echo the sentiments abut the success of our top three programs and would like to draw attention to the Cross Country programs as well. The men finished 17th nationally and are recruiting well and the women competed this season while redshirting two All Americans. Next year could be a very good year for both teams.

Track is going to take some time due to facility needs. We don't have a track. The past staff fought this fight as well and I hope that Corey is able to get the help that the past staff was not able to get to return the Cyclones to glory on the oval.

It is always healthy to enjoy the accomplishments of great people and our student athletes are achieving great things. We miss alot of that due to our focusing on the Big 2 sports. While that is understandable, it is too bad.

    Go Cyclones!

I had missed on that. Thanks for the update!

Re: Thank god for Bill Fennelly and Christi Johnson

As much credit Johnny Orr gets for basketball at ISU, by far Bill Fennelly is THE greatest basketball coach ISU has ever had, either men or women's. I know some think they need to name the floor after Orr but I think by the time Fennelly retires he by far deserves that honor more than any BB coach ISU has had. I don't know of a coach in any program at ISU that has done as much as Bill has. He came in when maybe 50 people came to a game and women's BB wasn't even on the radar with ISU fans and turned it into a consistent and successful nationally respected program that is one of the most well-attended as well.

I think Bill is everything ISU fans could want of a coach and more. A great man on and off the court, loyal to ISU and is sincere about his commitment to ISU, runs a clean program, demands and expects the most from his players, and builds character in his players as well and prepares them for life in general not just basketball. I'm sure over the years he's had chances at other jobs but stuck with us and when the day comes that he decides to retire (hopefully not for a long time!) there are going to be a lot of teary eyes in Hilton that day I'm sure because words can't come close to expressing what this man has done here.
