    NCAA Tournament Attendance?

Watching all of these Sweet 16 and Elite 8 games, I'm seeing a lot of empty seats. I know most of the tickets are probably sold but I wonder what the actual attendance for these games is?

Also, why did they decide to play these things in HUGE football stadiums? They put the cout all the way at one end so more than 1/2 of the seats are unusable.

One last thing, seeing the attendance in the Metrodome makes me 100% think that Des Moines would be a perfect site for the 1st round games.

I agree. It would look more impressive to use arenas and sell them out.

No reason why DSM can't work for a tournament site. Just no reason.

I see that the Missouri/UCONN game had an announced attendance of 18,886...it didn't look like there were near that many people there.

They were on the concourse warming up their cars.

Because the NCAA uses the tournament as a cash cow.

Seeing games in Boise every couple years makes me think that Des Moines should host - even if Boise has less competition for hosting than Des Moines does.

    Re: NCAA Tournament Attendance?

I was at the Sweet 16, Elite 8 games last year in Detroit. They have them in these stadiums to maximize attendence... these places are just so big they look like they aren't attended well. If you have it in a normal arena you have a capacity issue, in these stadiums they know they wont sell out but they also know they'll get more in to see the games.

Also. They use these sites to have a "practice" round to hosting the Final 4. Iron out the issues this round, and next year one of them will be hosting the Final 4.

I agree. If Boise can do it, we can do it. It's not like the sites are segregated by region like the old days anyway. Des Moines has a history of really doing a nice job hosting whatever events we can draw in.

Why not just play in the US Airways Center in Phoenix that holds 18,422? It's a lot better basketball environment than a huge football stadium.

Of course, the year they would have games here, ISU would make the dance, and be sent somewhere far away, so the local draw wouldn't be there.

How many of those tickets went to Purdue and Memphis fans who left town when their teams lost? I think fans have to buy tickets to both nights when they buy tourney tickets.

    Yeah, that's the setup.

I remember that the Final Four was like that in 1989, as far as Illinois fans and Duke fans started to clear out a little bit when their teams lost.

Des Moines doesn't have the Hotel rooms to host. The thing with all the empty seats are they keep playing in football stadiums for some reason.

The NCAA has the game in football stadiums to sell as many tickets as possible. I don't buy the hotel rooms argument - if Boise can host games, so can Des Moines. Boise doesn't have anything Des Moines doesn't.

They claim there are enough rooms in Des Moines. The airport is one problem with Des Moines. The NCAA claims to want to send teams close to home but why do they send UNI and Purdue clear across the country to play?
