    Ankeny Police Incompetent!

I figure this will get some play but why are the Ankeny Police so BADGE HEAVY! First off, this does NOT pertain to me but Someone close to me whom I trust. The Ankeny Police seen more content to hone their skills on two areas rather then protect the Community. The two areas are "Window Tinting" and License plates (front). Tell me, Where is the "COMPELLING" state interest in these matters? It certainly can't be a safety issue. Oh, I got it, Its a easy mark, easy money, and they don't put themselves in peril going after these areas like following up a robbery, chasing druggies or domestic disputes. When seconds count COPS are only minutes away...... giving someone a BS ticket because his windows are too dark or he has no front license plate. The ONLY legal plate on your car is the one with the sticker on it. Try switching them around and you'll receive a ticket for that. As long as one can prove ownership and has a rear plate properly stickered that should suffice. Window tinting? Who cares. Do any of you really care if the guy next to you has dark windows? Truth is, many COP cars have the same tinting, some as dark but I am sure they are not receiving tickets. How about sun-glasses. IF the police contend that they wanna see your eyes..... then I want to see theirs.

Yesterday, A vehicle was pulled over for speeding. The vehicle travelled a little ways and was in a school zone PICKING UP HIS 5 year old. After handing the officer his license he told the officer he had to watch for his kid. The officer was in the patrol car I am sure doing a wants and warrants while the gentleman waited outside for his kid to show up. When his son approached he put him in the car along with his daughter and sea tbelted him in. It was at this time he noticed the officer out of his car "TRIANGULATING" him with his hand on his revolver!!! When asked why he was acting like that and putting him is a very uncomfortable position the officer replied quote "I thought you were going to run!!!"

He told the officer... " You have my license, I live 1 mile away, you have my plate number, a description of my car, I have my two children in my car with me." Where the hell am I going to go? Then you put your hand on your weapon for what reason..... are you willing to SHOOT someone for SPEEDING? Is it worth someones life to be killed in front of his children for speeding when you already have all the info you need for a proper arrest if necessary?
Attempting to pull a handgun or be ready to at a elementary school in ANKENY is unacceptable to me. Talk about putting all of us in danger, and poor decision making.

I am sure you will hear more about this incident as the person involved feels the Officer in question acted irresponsibly and chose a poor decision making process which is first and foremost the most important attribute in LAW enforcement.

Ankeny should be ashamed of this officers conduct and it should NOT be condoned. BTW, He has been a Officer since 2007. Talk about a Rambo. Real tough cop, Strapping leather against a father and his two kids........ Absolutely shameful!!!!!

Both are state laws and just about anyone that lives in the state knows it - you're not allowed to tint the front windows and you must have a license plate on the front of the car. Anyone breaking these is just begging for a ticket, and if you got one you deserve it.

I live in Ankeny, have been pulled over by the po-po twice, and have nothing but good things to say about them. Excellent police force in my opinion.

    Re: Ankeny Police Incompetent!

The officer clearly didn't need to reach for his weapon and I assume he will get some remedial training if the chief is contancted. However, you water down your argument by complaining in the first paragraph about plates and tint. It's the officers job to enforce laws, not write them. If you have a problem with the law, take it up with your legislators and local government.

Also, I've lived in Ankeny for 2 years now and I have never had a bad experience with the Ankeny PD. Oh wait, I never break the law.

YES! Alot of people will never realize this. Some people love to hate police. Cant tell you how many friends of mine found a reason to hate a cop. They arent an issue unless you are!

Maybe the person shouldn't have sped; maybe they should have had the front license plate on; maybe they shouldn't have tinted their windows...I don't see how the police are incompetent.

My wife and I argue about these things all the time. Mainly because she keeps getting pulled over for speeding or cutting someone off. She's been lucky in getting a few warnings. it's always the same story though, "Why'd he pick me out." "That guy was an *******." "I wasn't doing anything wrong." "I wasn't going any faster than anyone else." In the end, my wife was speeding and I've never found that an officer had undue cause in pulling her over. I love my wife, but it drives me nuts that she never thinks she's doing anything wrong on the roads. She still swears, a ticket she got was unjust. I saw the cop, told her to slow down and saw for myself she was doing 40 in a 25. I told her she was lucky the cop dropped it to 34 in a 25. She's still ****** about it.

I've never understood the thought process that cops are out to get you or they singled you out. I know quite a few officers and none of them enjoy pulling people over. They don't do it for fun.

If you don't like getting pulled over for speeding, don't speed. At all, don't go with the flow, go 5 mph over, just don't speed. And I'm with you jdoggivjc. If it's a law it's a law. It really doesn't matter if you agree with the law or not, it's still a law. You can always make attempts to change the law, but if you don't follow what's on the books, you should pay the price.

    Re: Ankeny Police Incompetent!

Gotta agree with the sentiments here. When your friend opened the door to his car and was leaning in, the officer has no idea what he is doing and has every right to move himself into a position to protect himself.
