Increasing the popularity of women's basketball

Interesting take on a way to make women's basketball more popular.

Re: Increasing the popularity of women's basketball

Hate to say it, but even with ISU in the Sweet 16, I'm still not that interested in watching women's basketball. Excited for them, yes. Just not into it.

    Pretty good article though.

Re: Increasing the popularity of women's basketball

I don't think it would ever work. Basketball has become a game of high flying dunks and amazing plays. Women obviously aren't doing the high flying dunks. I'm a fan of women's basketball, but I can understand people who don't like it just because women aren't going to play the same way men do.

Re: Increasing the popularity of women's basketball

I wouldnt change the tournament format, and the idea of pushing the schedule back a month has some merit, but I would definitely miss the combined B12 Tourney with both teams.

You gotta love Pat Summit. She holds a 2 hour practice AFTER getting knocked out of the NCAAs to work on fundamentals. That's awesome.

Everyone I know says WBB isn't that good and they aren't interested. If you can get them to a few games they quickly change their mind.

Exactly. I enjoy women's basketball to a certain degree, but mostly because I enjoy watching the fundamentals, good spacing, good ball movement, and the nearly-forgotten art of the mid range jumper. If you need athleticism and the highlight reel plays to enjoy basketball, you're going to hate WBB.

People love seeing a bunch of three pointers knocked down. The women do that as well or better than the men.

Re: Increasing the popularity of women's basketball

Interesting ideas, but I disagree with cutting the field and best of 3 series. The long shot winning in one game format is still a big draw for both tourneys. I get the being different from the men's game, but not in this way.

Most people love seeing thundering dunks. Women don't do that. Many people don't care about fundamentals.

Re: Increasing the popularity of women's basketball

I think the earlier poster nailed it when he said they don't play the same way as the men. I love the success our girls have and usually make it to a game every year but it just isn't the same draw for me. Basketball to me is the best athletes in the world doing unbelievable things physically and that isn't as common in the women.

Women's tennis players play the same way as guys do. I think that's one reason they enjoy similar crowds.
