cool things to hunt in Iowa

I saw that there is a small area of NE Iowa where hunting ruffled grouse is permitted. I watched a thing on the discovery channel called 'pig bomb' about the boom of wild hogs in america, and I was wondering if any are living in iowa yet? if so can you hunt them? what other 'different' things can you hunt (aside from the usual upland game, deer, turkey, waterfowl, etc)?

Re: cool things to hunt in Iowa

I have heard there are some feral pigs in southern Iowa and people are starting to hunt them, but not sure... I always thought it would be fun to release a few on private land for sport...

wow that is interesting that we are getting grouse in Iowa, that could bring big revenue if we can get a significant population and maintain it. as for the pigs i think that is more south and southwest, I know there are some in AZ and I would love to shoot one, I loves me some bacon!

Bobcats...idk if you even need a permit. I think you may just have to call the DNR afterwards to report it.

You definately need a permit for bobcats and you can only take them in certain counties. We do not want feral hogs in Iowa. They may be fun to hunt but are a real detriment to our other wildlife and humans. The spring conservation snow goose hunt is a missed opportunity for many people. We shot 50 last sunday over decoys. I also got a picture of cougar tracks in n Iowa in Jan.

Feral pigs are a big nuisance. They carry a lot of disease and could cause serious problems for the states pork industry. They are starting to be seen more and more in southern Iowa. Right now I don't think there are any restrictions on killing them but there isn't a huge population. Coyotes are another animal that is finding its way back into Iowa. Again they carry a lot of disease and there are no restrictions on killing them either.

that is how they are spreading throughout the US after their initial escape from a circus in the smoky mountains. btw, there are places you can do it legally, but they have to be fenced in so as to not spread. this is a 550 lb boar my buddy got in missourah. apparantly he shot it and it didnt die, and it charged him and his brother finished it or something like that.

I think they'd be fun to hunt because it is sort of a free for all in most places. you can shine them, chase em on 4 wheelers, hunt em with dogs (which they will attack back). They are terrible for the environment due to their great reproductive success and the fact that they uproot everything and have led to some plants becoming endangered in the smokies. imagine what they could do in a land of abundant food such as iowa? they would just terrorize the crops.

I talked with the DNR last year at the Pork Congress they were reporting that feral sows have broken into boar test stations to get bred! Really did a lot of damage. So there must be limited eligible bachelors out there.

Coyotes have been in Iowa for a long time. I grew up in Northern Iowa and there were guys hunting them when I was a little kid. Our dog used to bark with them at night...
