UCONN Men's Basketball and NCAA Violations

FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE BASKETBALL - Report: UConn may have broken recruiting rules

The UConn staff was in frequent contact with Nochimson for about two years during and after Miles' recruitment. Calhoun and his assistant coaches traded at least 1,565 phone calls and text messages with Nochimson, according to records the site obtained. That amount of contact might also have violated NCAA rules governing contact with recruits.
Normally I don't think this would be a huge deal but after Kelvin Sampson's mess, you would think teams would learn.

Kick them out of the NCAA tournament and make them go to the NIT.

Re: UCONN Men's Basketball and NCAA Violations

If you get the clearly limited calls and text contacts, how do you get to 1565? 1565??

That just smacks of folks that don't care about the rules.

If there's one guy, does it stand to reason that there could be a lot more there?

And just like Indiana, the NCAA will save the real punishments for schools like Iowa State.

I know you say it's not really a big deal normally, but if other schools normally follow the rules, then this is a big deal. It's pretty specific, the amount of times you get to contact a recruit. A violation is a violation. Maybe it's not as bad as buying the kid with cash, but I don't see how, teams that follow the rule, are at any less of a disadvantage. If the NCAA keeps letting them get away with it, without punishment, they'll continue to do it.

I love the statement that this MIGHT have violated the contact rules. Well we texted and called the kid 1565 times, but we're not sure if that violated the rules.

The story makes for a great headline, but this will be swept under the rug quickly. Recruiting violations happen every day on every campus.

Violations happening and violations caught are two different things. People speed down I235 every minute of every day, but no one worries about it until they get pulled over. Then it becomes a problem for them.

Re: UCONN Men's Basketball and NCAA Violations

If UConn were to get a serious penalty, does this serve as a deterrent to future cheaters?

I think it should, but I have a suspicion that it won't.

Re: UCONN Men's Basketball and NCAA Violations

    Long story short:
Step 1: Big Name school violates rules (UConn).
Step 2: NCAA sets example by punishing I State for rediculous rule nobody understands. (Gas Prices in Iowa were lower than the national average thus Chris Colvin was given 'extra' benefits to save him money when driving between home and school by an I State booster (the state of Iowa) because I State is a land grant institution.)
Step 3: Everything's back to normal.

Re: UCONN Men's Basketball and NCAA Violations

I GUARANTEE nothing happens to UCONN because of this. The NCAA is an absolute joke and nothing ever gets done to the big schools. Remember the whole Maurice Clarett issue at Ohio State, or Reggie Bush's parents getting a free house while he was at USC? Whatever happened to them? Oh yeah...nothing!

    The NCAA is freakin' rediculous!

Yep, this thread has just been pwned.

Re: UCONN Men's Basketball and NCAA Violations

You guys got it all wrong, we'll get suspended because Jamie Vanderbeken chose Iowa State over UCONN.

“One day we’ll be in here celebrating a Big 12 championship,” Rhoads said. “That I can promise you.”

"I hope to coach here until I retire," Hoiberg said.

Re: UCONN Men's Basketball and NCAA Violations

Question for everyone. Would you go to a school where the coach called you 1500 times? I mean, what every happened to playing hard to get. 1500 times sounds like stalking...not recruiting.
