Do mid-majors have a legit gripe?

Pretty good article in the Omaha World Herald that breaks down if the mid-majors really did get screwed this year.

Here's an opinion piece from the San Diego Union-Tribune that takes up the opposite side of the argument. I have to admit, I think the Mountain West did get the shaft this year.

Being denied NCAA berth sounds like a plot

They are just mad Creighton got left out.

Without playing the games it's hard to say. The NIT will give us a good idea...

Re: Do mid-majors have a legit gripe?

Thanks for posting that article from the San Diego paper. I do think San Diego State got screwed, and should have gotten in over Arizona. I think the OWH speaks to a bigger issue. These mid-major teams need to suck it up and play the big boys on the road so they can get some national attention and respect. They don't have to play the Dukes, UConns, and North Carolinas, but why not go play at Iowa State, Nebraska, Iowa, etc...Those places aren't exactly impossible to win at and a win there looks a lot better than if they beat Southern Texas State A&M at home.

Did you read the article? The writer says he thinks San Diego St (not Creighton) should have gotten in over Arizona.

Just combine the NIT with the "Big Dance" and have the number 1 and 2 seeds have a first round bye and everyone who is anyone is included.

Re: Do mid-majors have a legit gripe?

My feeling is Creighton should have scheduled better. The MVC is a decent conference but not great remember they only got 1 team in last year as well. I think the 2 teams that have a grip are St.Mary's and San Diego State. St. Mary's with the Patty Mills injury would have made the dance and it wouldn't have been close if he hadn't been injured. San Diego St. would have made it if Mississippi St or USC wouldn't have made their run. San Diego St. needed a couple more good wins out of conference

In general I have always agreed with that logic. It just seems like the mid-majors this year may have gotten the short end of the deal (I'm not a big basketball fan though, so I claim no authority on the subject).

It does take two to schedule though, and there isn't much incentive for the BCS schools to schedule a mid-major if there is any chance of losing. I sat in Cox arena a few years ago and watched the Cyclones lose to SDSU. As an ISU fan, I'd prefer to never see that happen again.

Re: Do mid-majors have a legit gripe?

I agree it takes two and the majors have way more to lose. That's why the mid-majors need to suck it up and play on the road. There is no way a big time top 25 team would ever play on the road at a place like Creighton. Why would they?

A major program would play them at home, but not on the road. The article also makes a good point about how Butler built their resume. They didn't play but 2 major teams, but they played a lot of higher caliber mid-major teams. That is a pretty good model.

These mid-major teams would also have even worse resumes if ESPN didn't create the Bracket Buster event. It's only 1 game, but sometimes that can make or break a team.

Kind of made two arguments here, but they both have some validity.

    1) If the mid-majors want to play the big guys, they'll have to go on the road or play them in a tournament like Maui, Alaska, NIT, or whoever will bring them in.

    2) Playing one another is probably the best way it's going to work, as long as the loss that one team absorbs doesn't hurt their chances later on for the NCAAs. I wouldn't want to see them eliminate one another.

That last one's my only concern. I think you have a really nice post there.

I really hope that wouldn't be the case.

If you're a top team in a top conference, one loss to a respectable mid-major shouldn't kill your resume if you've got 20+ wins overall and a good record in your conference. To be honest, a loss against a team like UNI or Creighton wouldn't be any worse than a Big 12 team losing to Colorado or a Big 10 team losing to Indiana.

If you're a mid-major, your problem usually isn't number of wins...it's lack of exposure or a weak SOS. A couple losses on the road against top-20 teams should kill their resume.

I agree with shouldn't. One loss (unless it's the only good team on your resume) shouldn't kill any team's resume. Whether it does or not isn't really my call, but I wonder sometimes if it does.

You mention a Big 12 team. I remember during the Big 12 tourny, the announcers were mentioning that OSU built their tournament resume by playing top teams in the conference and losing to them.

If a mid-major does this, should it penalize them? (And yes, I really wanted Davidson in the tourny.)
