The first "Why we lost Harrison Barnes" thread

OK, I'm posting it, the first "why we lost Harrison Barnes" autopsy thread. From that KCCI interview, it appears that he is NOT coming to ISU. So let's accept that and figure out why it happened.

The "business school" thing is a straw man. I'm ignoring it. The real crux of the issue to me is his talk about a "decent team." That's where we screwed up. To me, it sounds like he wants to come to ISU, he just does not want to risk being another Craig Brackins. IE: the best player on a horrible team. We can debate about whether or not next year's team will be any good, but the fact is there is at least a small chance that that could happen if he came here, and that is what he does not want.

I think we could have attracted him to ISU had we had some sort of post-season play. Even the NIT might have attracted him. Heck, even Nebraska is in the NIT. But since we were so bad even the NIT wouldn't look at us, he does not want to run the risk I mentioned above.

It is a pity that we don't have another year. Even if we are an NCAA Tourny team in 2009/2010, that would be too late. Barnes has to make his decision THIS year, he can't wait until next year. So he has to decide based on this year's team, and we totally screwed that up.

Here's the reason he is not coming. If he would have had any success in his 3 years, HB would be coming.

ABSOLUTELY. People can sugar coat, and come up with other reasons. They can buy the business school (keep mind ISU's business school isn't bad) line if it helps you get to bed at night, but the bottom line is he wants to play on a winning team...

What he said. I haven't followed things that closely but I thought I read in a different thread the interview refered to in this thread isn't even the first time he said that stuff.

I highly doubt this is the first thread to discuss the topic either, maybe just the first with a title like it

Yay another negative thread where ISU fans can be negative about ISU instead of supporting it.

Man I love these threads, it makes me proud of ISU and where I am from and the people who I associate with...

If you honestly believe that this is the first time the issue of why ISU is not getting Barnes has been discussed, than your an idiot.

The reason we didn't get him was because of Duke.

ABSOLUTELY! I've never seen Cyclone "fans" trash our coaches at every single chance possible as much as they do here. It amazes me.

With pleasure. Barnes exploded on the national scene this year, and enjoyed the feeling. Sure, ISU would have better chances if they were winning, but as we found out with other top in-state talent over the years, they have the opportunity. This isn't isolated to ISU. Duke grabs top players from everywhere, as does other elite programs. Oregon fans must be irritated by now. We have lost in-state talent before, even when we were winning.

I bet Barnes is going to look good in Tar Heel Blue.

Stop being so rational. Here is a list of the 2009 Rivals top recruits and where they are committed:

#2 DeMarcus Cousins - From Mobile, AL - Going to Memphis.
#3 Xavier Henry - From Oklahoma City - Going to Memphis.
#4 Derrick Favors - From Atlanta - Going to Georgia Tech
#5 Jordan Hamilton - From LA - Going to Texas
#6 John Henson - From Tampa - Going to North Carolina
#7 Kenny Boynton - From Plantation, FL - Going to Florida
#8 Avery Bradley - From Henderson, NV - Going to Texas

So 2 of the top 8 are staying instate. Does that mean Jeff Capel is to blame for not landing the kid from OKC? Or Tim Floyd is to blame for not getting the #5 kid?

Like CycloneYoda said...this happens ALL of the time.
