    Alarming Recruiting Trend

The thread about our future expectations for men's basketball got me thinking about how we have always been excited for "next years" recruiting classes but that they never seem to pan out. After clicking back through the past few recruiting classes it becomes apparent why the program is on hard times lately.

Very good post. We have not retained the few good players we have gotten lately. That is a recipe for disaster for a basketball program.

    Re: Alarming Recruiting Trend

Good post. I can see how people would consider a lot these guys busts. I will say this about Taggart, his situation (illness) has been well documented by many on this board. I wouldn't call him a bust because he transferred. He has put up some solid numbers this year at Memphis. We also need to remember that not all recruits coming in are going to be star players. Being a good role player is just as important as being a star player. The problem is that most of these guys either didn't make it to campus or where kicked off the team shortly there after. I-State has had some crappy luck of late. The pieces are there now, if they will stay in place. That is yet to be seen unfortunately....

Agreed. I don't understand the people who say it's McDermott's fault if he doesn't get Barnes. If he didn't go to school in Ames we would have absolutely no chance with him. He wants a good business school who has a chance to win a NC. That doesn't exactly describe us. The only reason we even have a remote chance at landing him is because he grew up in our backyard. If we do manage to get him, I think it'll be a miracle. If not, I won't be surprised, nor will I blame McD. A kid from Iowa has the opportunity to go and compete for a national title, how often does that happen? I'll be disappointed if he doesn't come to ISU, but I won't blame him for a second. At this point, I just hope he doesn't go to Duke or Kansas.

    Re: Alarming Recruiting Trend

This decade we've had 4 recruited high school players complete their eligibility at Iowa State. And 1 of those was Scogs.

    Re: Alarming Recruiting Trend

Bust is a bad word to use IMO. There is no way that Carr, Degand, or Taggart can be considered a bust. There career here didn't pan out, that I can agree with

There is no doubt that being able to retain players is what is really killing this team. A mixture of that and recruiting below average players

Taggart and Brackins would be really fun to watch on the block. :)

Carr and Degand didnt really light it up where they went after ISU. Taggart is a nice role player. IMO Morgan was overrated as a recuriter.

    Re: Alarming Recruiting Trend

I don't really know what to make of this, and some of you will probably argue with my boom/bust labels, but here are two of the country's best programs' recruits over the same time period. And I'm sorry, but if you play 1 year, then you get either bust or good while they lasted no matter how good you were. Also, those that signed and skipped to the NBA are busts, because they never contributed to the school

    UNC

    2002
Boom: Raymond Felton, Sean May, Rashad McCants, David Noel
    Bust: Damion Grant, Byron Sanders

    2003
    Average: Reyshawn Terry
Bust: Nick Cangelosi, Jesse Holley, Justin Bohlander

    2004
    Average: Quentin Thomas
    Bust: Earl Smith
Good while they lasted: Marvin Williams

    2005
    Boom: Danny Green, Tyler Hansbrough
    Average: Marcus Ginyard, Bobby Frasor
    Bust: Michael Copeland

    2006
Boom: Wayne Ellington, Tywon Lawson, Deon Thompson
    Average: William Graves
    Bust: Alex Stepheson
Good while they lasted: Brandan Wright

    2007
    N/A

    2008
    Boom: Ed Davis, Tyler Zeller
    TBD: Larry Drew, Justin Watts
