Is ISU Poised for a Big Step Up in 2009?

    Just a few reasons...

A returning 700 yard rusher in junior Alexander Robinson...who is going to have plenty of help, and may be pushed by the likes of Bo Williiams.

An offensive line that started to gel late, and lost only a single starter.

A deep and talented corps of receivers. Man, is that an understatement.

A seasoned, very talented junior quarterback who passed for almost 2800 yards, and rushed for 400 more.

An offensive coordinator who is a Mensa member.

A defense laden with seniors, I'm counting at least nine on the two deep.

Talented junior college transfers and redshirts who should be ready to step up to fill the most pressing needs--notably David Sims!!

A seasoned defensive coordinator who had fielded some very tough attacking defenses.

A talented experienced place kicker (with a spare in case Mahoney is injured) and a proven senior punter. Brandtner's 41.6 is pretty dang good, considering how often he was still asked to pooch punt with a green placekicker.

A head coach who is dedicated not only to his job and his team, but to our great University.

Now, I'm sure that some will quibble, but after a 2-10 season, it doesn't take much for a "big" step up. And besides, given our schedule, I see a great many games that are, at the least, within our grasp right now.

Check back with me after Spring ball.

Oh yeah...the thread title? Just couldn't resist....

Small steps, small steps.. A big step for me is a Bowl game, and I just don't see that happening.

Re: Is ISU Poised for a Big Step Up in 2009?

    I'm going to say no.

Our defense is just not there yet. We have some great players but as a whole, we are another year or two (or several Juco's) from being good. If somehow, we have 4-5 guys step up on the DL, that should improve our LB play, which will definately be the weak spot. If that happens, we have a shot to win 6-7 games maybe.

My prediction is, the DL is too young and inexperienced and our LB's are just below serviceable. Thus only winning 3-4 games.

Not worried about the offense at all though.

I drink the Kool-Aid heavily and simply cannot wait for August. I do not think it is unreasonable to think that we could challenge for 6 or 7 wins (we "could have" won 6 games last season) and a postseason appearance somewhere, albeit Shreveport or its ilk.

At least you used the right word/spelled it correctly. "Poised"

Well, if you consider a Bowl game to be six or seven wins, I don't see that as impossible. Especially the six wins part--and arguably, four more wins would be a big step up from two.

But I still think that a bowl game is easily within our reach. My big question is about the defense, and while "defense wins championships", the likes of Missouri, OK State and Texas Tech have shown that offense gets you to Bowls.

And at least our defense has plenty of seniors. Senior leadership is a good thing.

Re: Is ISU Poised for a Big Step Up in 2009?

I would be extremely suprised and thrilled with 6 wins and a potential bowl game, so I really wouldn't consider us poised to get there. I still have doubts about our front 7 on defense.

I think we will see A LOT of improvement and I'm hoping for a BIG step up, but your reasons included 2 defensive aspects of the game both of which aren't very tangible at this point in time.

Re: Is ISU Poised for a Big Step Up in 2009?

Step up? Just about the only way to go, isn't it. Sure we had two wins last year, so reason says we could go 0-for. But that isn't much of drop to be honest.

How big? Not sure. It's alot to ask for x2 or more wins from a new coach, new system. However someone in the media said over the winter that ISU fans and players got the shaft from Chizless in that he ran the '08 season with one eye in Ames, and one eye looking to get out of Ames. I think you can see that in some gameday performances by the staff. Having a focused, committed staff could do wonders.

There's alot of talent on this team Charlie. We just need something to bring all together.

Maybe Rhoads can be enough to make a decent leap. But bowling is out of the question/expectation, IMO.

An offensive line that started to gel late, and lost only a single starter. - I have a little problem with this one as I never really saw the "gelling". I believe the line could be better, but injuries will have a factor with this (as it did last year) and how well we are able to run ball will really show the improvement or lack there of IMO.

A deep and talented corps of receivers. Man, is that an understatement.

A seasoned, very talented junior quarterback who passed for almost 2800 yards, and rushed for 400 more.

An offensive coordinator who is a Mensa member. - This one is really not that impressive, nor will it relate to anything incredible with football.

A defense laden with seniors, I'm counting at least nine on the two deep. - Not sure if this is good or bad considering how awful our defense was last year.

Talented junior college transfers and redshirts who should be ready to step up to fill the most pressing needs--notably David Sims!! - I would be more impressed if the "talented" JC and redshirts were for the defensive line. If we can't put a pass rush on a QB, then it really doesn't matter how good a Safety or CB is - they can only cover for so long.

Comments above. Not trying to down play the optimism as I think we could be better, but knowing that the team has to get use to a new coaching staff and philosphy/terminology, I don't know that we will be much better than 6-6 at best and 2-10 at worst.

This is about the only thing I really agree with you on. Texas Tech is a great example that they has a serviceable defense over the years just to give the offense a break. They still have went to a bowl in every one of Leach's years on the job.

Missouri and Oklahoma State are good examples as well. Great examples of how a bad defense can hold you back.

While I think our offense will eventually do enough to win games for us I can still see our defense losing them and costing us those 6 wins you think we should have.

I'd also argue that the line that began to gel lost its most important player after last season. Guess we'll see.
