    wind energy in Iowa...

I saw this article in the Omaha WH that was very positive about the development in wind energy in Iowa, and how Nebraska lags behind (go figure). I actually worked for Nebraska's largest power utility for several years, and believe you me, they sure the heck don't like change over there. The guy's comment on how conservative they are is dead on. I knew Iowa produced a lot of wind energy, but #2 in the USA was surprising.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Iowa is #1 in percent of power from wind but #2 in the amount of energy produced.

Drive west from Mason City on Highway 18 some night - all of the red lights are clusters of windmills.

What about all the wind energy that comes out of the mouths of Hawkeye fans? We could power every home in America.

They're all over the Western half of Iowa. Many parts of America suffer from NIMBY-ism with these things. But the cooperation of the power utilities and the farmers has worked better here.

    Re: wind energy in Iowa...

The NW part of Iowa has a bunch of windmills, especially around the Hwy 69 part north of Hwy 20. My future inlaws are near Spencer and there are 10 of them within a few miles of there place (pretty small compared to the big farm of them just south of Clarion.) Supposedly some idiots have been shooting high powered rifles at the props which ruins them and costs thousands of dollars to replace.

That is because the lease is more profitable than farming. If my memory is correct, the lease per turbine is $4,000/year with at least a 10 year lease (I am 90% sure it is much longer, but cannot remember for sure).

With most of these having 3-4/40 acres it is very profitable, plus you cansstill farm most the ground.

So for many, it is I wish it was in my back yard.

Many of those wind farms aren't even owned by Iowa Utilities. Florida Power and Light just finished a project in the Crystal Lake area northwest of Clear Lake and are building another wind farm in Story County by Nevada.

Yeah, but a lot of time the power companies are locking in 40 year easements with an option for another 50. Very long term deals. I would think twice about it.

Iowa is number 1 in wind energy:

    - Per capita
    - Per person
    - Percentage of power

We just passed California in the overall MWs. Second only Texas now. Since Iowa's turbines are in general a lot newer than Cali's, we get a lot more out of each one.

Everything I've heard its normally for 30 years. They do try to get an agreement with a block of farmers, rather than individual agreements with each one. I think the going rate is ~$2,500 a year per MW (2 MW per wind turbine in general) with a built in percentage raise every year.

There are things to consider. Some people report being driven crazy by a number of things:

    - the soft "whoosh" of the blades if you're within ~ 1000 ft.
    - the blinking of 100 red lights in unison (one on every tower in the farm)
    - the possibility of catastrophic failure: rare, but there was a run away one in Mason City last month that had they evacuated people for
    - the use of the access roads which cross your property

It must be a good deal for a lot of people, as you see more "no hog confinement" signs than you do "no wind farm" signs. Do we have anyone on CF that has one in their backyard?
