    Most tortured sports fans

I was out in Philly a couple weeks ago for work, and on one of their early morning radio shows, they were discussing the most tortured sports fans, obviously thinking that Philly fans were the clear winners. They wanted people to call in if they had any other fans who may have been more tortured over the years. I thought about it, and called in....and not to bring back any bad memories, but this was the case I made:
    I started in 1997.
1997- Sweet 16 vs. UCLA...ISU blows a 20 point lead and then loses at the buzzer.
2000- Elite 8 vs. Mich. St....Cyclones get hosed by officials late in a game that should have been the national championship.
2001- First Round vs. Hampton...we all know what happened
    2003- The Larry Incident
2004- The Missouri game, needing to win at home to clinch Big 12 north...Lose in OT after missed 19 yard FG in regulation
2005- Go 7-4 in regular season, losses are to Nebraska in OT, Mizzou in OT, to Baylor at home, and to Kansas in OT, again with a chance to clinch Big 12 North.....also, a real tornado hits Ames an hour before the Colorado game
2006- Promising B-Ball team falls flat, the Wayno saga, Football team falls apart, Mac gets canned.
2008- Chizz bolts for Auburn after 2 season

Obviously, out in Philly they were largely unaware of all of ISU's misfortunes, but were "impressed" by the case that I had laid out, and acutally ended up giving the Cyclones the title of "most tortured fans"....Between this and Cy's recent success, I think we're heading in the right direction.

When we reach the mountaintop, it will be that much sweeter... Its hard for me to respect fans of dynasties. They just have it too damn easy. When you show up to an ISU tailgate, see 50,000 people out partying, having a good time, and then pack the house to see a team that hasn't won anything, ever, lose, you have to respect it....

    Re: Most tortured sports fans

Add to that the '02 fb team that started 5-1 (or something like that), reached #8 in the polls and finished off the year by losing to UConn at home and Boise St in the smurf-turf bowl and I think with a losing record.

And it was the '03 season where Danny Mac proclaimed all offseason that although we lost Seneca, we had something like like 20 of 24 returners coming back. Only to lay a giant egg.

At the time though, people thought that loss to Boise St was a really bad one since it wasn't a BCS conference team, but looking back and seeing what Boise St's done in the past few years, it's not that hard to see that it would've been a tough game for us to win.

Right? I mean it has to run out eventually, doesnt it? Misery is not infinite I would think.

They weren't all that great that year. Probably better than they got credit for, but still.

Anyway, that team fell off the map when they travelled to UT and OU.

And to have to watch that game on the hideous blue field. Really ... a bowl game against a team on their home field? (granted it was a bowl created for them...)

I might pour a little salt on the wound. Our arch-rival, who we beat that year, goes on the play in a BCS bowl.

The loss to BSU in a bowl game on their home field didn't bother me as much as losing to UCONN at JT in the last game of the year.

We actually played pretty well at UT that year (led 10-7 at halftime, lost 21-10), and were still a Top 20 team. It was the previous week in Norman (No. 9 ranking, lost 49-3, 63 yards of total offense for the game) that really emasculated us.

    Re: Most tortured sports fans

Also a couple of heartbreakers in wbb, losing to Penn. St. in sweet sixteen in K.C. right after watching the men lose to MSU earlier in the day, and losing to BYU the year ISU had a possible final four run because ISU would have been playing at Hilton all the way until the final four.

Philly used to be tortured. However did they not win the world series?

Props to you man. We need to get our story out. This is something the public needs to be made aware of so we can address this problem. No other sports team should have to go through this.

I firmly believe that there's no such thing as bad press. It's very cool that we topped that list in Philly. It wasn't a list of teams that suck, quite the opposite; it would be a list of teams that were this close to breaking through. We may have some new fans in Philly because of it and more Cyclone fans is always good.
