    Model cars

Does anyone on here build plastic model cars? I have been doing it since I was 8 or so and I was wondering if I was the only one that still does these things?

I did for a while when I was in college - I haven't since I moved. I should probably pick it back up again

    Re: Model cars

I quit doing them for a little while too but I just finished two of them last month before a car show and ended up getting first place in the racecar division and 2nd in the senior division. It was sweet because it cost $1.00 each to enter them and I won a new model for each one that I entered.

    Re: Model cars

I collect slot cars. 1/32 scale. It's not the same as building plastics, but there is a lot of tinkering involved and at the end of the day, you get to race them.

These are the only pictures I have handy. I have well over 30 cars at this point.

You seem overly defensive about this. Are you sure?

Always loved the things as a kid. My dad had a few of his old ones from the 60s. I loved the larger ones. My first real job out of college was designing catalogs for a Hobby Distributor here in Illinois. They picked up the Scalextric line and I had to buy a set (Our price was great) Anyways. The company is in Europe. It was cheaper for them to just have us pitch all of the returns rather than ship them back to Europe. Anyways, our returns guy would let me know, "I just threw out 2 sets and a couple of cars, they are in the trash bin if you want them. (he actually kept them in a box for me next to the bin, but was supposed to officially throw them away.) So, it was a very inexpensive hobby for me to get into. I had to rebuild a lot of cars, but the track is what's really expensive and I was able to get loads of it.

Then as time progressed, the cars got faster, much more detailed, but I didn't work at that place anymore. I was hooked at that point though and continue to buy 2 or 3 cars a year. It's usually a Christmas gift from my kids. I'll tell them what cars I want and they get them for me.

At the end of the day though, I love racing them. I didn't set my track up this year as it just takes up waaay too much space. 100+ feet of track and the old computer sitting out for lap timing just doesn't give me enough room in the basement. Although the last couple of weks, I've been gettin the itch.

I used to play D&D when I was younger. I still would if life and work didn't take up so much of my time. I also have a pretty wife, two crazy little boys and drive a 38 year old muscle car in the summer and an AMG Mercedes with booster steats in the back seat. Don't buy into the stereo types.

Back in High School my friends dad had a 1970 (I think) 442 that was awesome, especiall when the top was down.

I'm very fond of my car, but it's no 442 unfortuately. Still fun to drive however and I used to drive it everyday there wasn't snow on the streets until I had kids. Those old cars just weren't designed with car seats (or anybodies safety really) in mind. That's why I got the Mercedes, it's got four doors and the kids fit in. Plus it's a lot faster and handles infinitely better than the old Cutlass. But it isn't quite as swanky.

    Re: Model cars

Have you done any work on your cutlass? From your pic it looks like it would be a fun car to just go drive around all day in.
