    Barnes and scholarship situation

I know some people are worried about where the scholarship will come from if Barnes commits to ISU but if his Mom is an employee of the university won't he get his school paid for so they wouldn't have to use a scholarship on him?

Maybe this has been discussed before and I've just missed it..."Outside the Lines" had a show last week where they were discussing package deals in Men's NCAA bball...and this was one of the scenarios...hiring recruit's Dads and then they wouldn't have to use a scholarship on the recruit...I believe Tim Floyd was accused of doing this for a possible recruit next year...

I don't think that you get free education just because your parent works for the university. I've known allot of full time employee and a guy who has both parents that work for the university, and they all had to pay.

I think HB could get a academic scholarship if they wanted to go that route to be honest. Maybe that's how the staff is approaching him?

    Re: Barnes and scholarship situation

On a side note, I was reading an article the other day about oversigning for football. I guess a school can sign as many as they want, but they have to be down to the correct number by the beginning of the school year. So if Barnes commits, they could probably pull the plug on someone else's scholarship, someone that is on the bench.

I'm pretty sure that ruling has been changed since we did that with Paul Shirley and it counts against the athletics scholarships.

That whole free tuition thing only applies to some private schools. Definately not Iowa State.

Also, I am pretty sure there is a difference in what type of benefits you receive when you are on an athletic scholarship and a different one. For example, I don't think you get access to things like training table, etc. I seem to remember this being an issue when Paul Shirley was here on a National Merit---and he ended up with an athletic. So I am pretty sure that Harrison will want to be on an athletic scholarship.

I've heard of tenured professors' children getting free educations at their parents' schools, but not EVERY employee.

    Re: Barnes and scholarship situation

It's been discussed before. Iowa's Regents Universities don't do the "free tuition for employee's kids"--at least, not any more.

Harrison will be on an athletic scholarship, either at ISU or elsewhere. And with attrition, there will be a spot for him one way or another.

You sure? I don't know what rationale you use for counting that against a program. Seems like you'd be penalizing a student for doing well in school.

Skoglund was on the team in a similar situation.

If Barnes wants to be a Clone. He will be a Clone. There will be a schollarship. I don't care if we have to pull a Tanya Harding on one of our current players not named Craig.

Skogs scholarship went against the limit tho. Wether it's basketball or academic doesnt matter. I think when Andy Stensrued was here he came in on a football scholarship but we had to count it against our basketball limit while he was on the team.

It may seem like you are penalizing the student, but the effect is to keep schools from offering BB stars academic scholarships as a way to increase the number of players on scholarship. But of course, no one would ever do such a thing as that.

My wife works for Drake and my daughter gets free tution there if she decides to go, but it is a private school so ISU might be different

That's why everyone keeps distinguishing between private schools and Regents'.

    Re: Barnes and scholarship situation

If an athlete receives any type of scholarship from the university, it must count against the overall limit for the sport. If we gave an academic scholarship to a basketball player, then we would only be allowed 12 others.

I think this rule was originally nicknamed the Bear Bryant rule, because he would find ways to have about 150 scholarship football players. He would have the normal allotment of 85 plus a bunch more on academic scholarships, bowling scholarships, archery scholarships, tiddleywinks scholarships, you name it.
