    What's up with ISU Gymnastics

What is Jamie Pollard's worst hire?

It may be Jay Ronayne, the head coach for ISU's women's gymnastics.

ISU had a very successful gymnastics team just a few years ago, with two Big12 crowns, the last in 2006. Ronayne had moderate success his first season, but in the last two seasons combined, ISU has a 2-18 record.

You want to know what is the most bizarre fact in ISU sports-ISU's gymnastics team is ranked 21st in the nation. A team that is 1-9 this season with only one game left is ranked. I'm sure part of it is the lack of gymnastics teams around the nation and partly due to a strong schedule, but still.

Gymnastics rankings are based on average scores and not W-L record like football or basketball so even though our scores may not be higher than our one opponent at a certain meet, the average scores must be higher than other schools, therefore giving us a higher ranking.

In my completely worthless, unknowledgeable gymnastics opinion, I think Jamie dropped the ball by letting KJ Kindler get away. We had probably a top 10 at least coach on campus that was born and bred ISU and let her go. Maybe he will try to improve facilities and lure her back. But, I am disappointed at how far we've dropped from the national scene in gymnastics...

Well what i find ironic is we've posted our two or three highest scores in iowa state gymnastics history this year. So take that for what it's worth.

Was she the one who had totally ridiculous expectations for facilities upgrades? Didn't she make demands for a gymnastics only facilities commitment? Or was that our old Volleyball coach?

I don't really remember the story, as evidenced by my first post, but what was her side?

Are you sure about that? The highest score of this year is 195.7, a number surpassed 4 times in '07. The highest score that year was 196.7. Don't know where you're getting your information...

Also, in '06, KJ's last year, that number was met or surpassed 13 times. With that season's high being 197.275.

As I recall she wanted to be able to hold practice somewhere that was air-conditioned and maybe some better office space. I don't think her demands were ridiculous. After all, everything she asked for, she got at Oklahoma -- who we are supposed to be competitive with.

Gene Smith, 1993-2000. 7 years, 6 NCAA's, 1 bowl game. Revenue sports postseason participation 50%. Good.
    Bruce Vandevelde, 2000-20005. 5 years, 4 bowl games, 2 NCAA's, 2 NIT's. Postseason participation 80%. Better.
    Jamie Pollard, 2005-. 4 years. 1 bowl game, 0 NCAA's, 0 NIT's. Postseason participation: 13%. The next big step.

My ignore list: splitidentity, tarheelhawk, superdorf, clones_jer. That is all.

    That statement is incorrect!!!

Our highest score this year was 195.700

    higher scores in 2006
    195.725
    196.075
    196.425
    196.700
    196.700
    195.925

We also scored more than 197.000 twice in 2005. I can go back further, but I think I made my point.

edit- I suppose it could be that we have posted record numbers in individual events. Otherwise, I'm guessing he saw in an article that we posted a season high and misread it.

It's going to take 4-5 years for the new coach to implement the system. I have complete faith the new coach will bring us to new heights. Just gotta be patient. Nobody runs a cleaner program or works harder than the new coach.

Re: What's up with ISU Gymnastics

I would say the glaring difference between gymnastics, football and basketball is that we were one of the top 6 teams in the country in '05 in gymnastics. Jay took over in 2006 and has led a team from there to 2 wins in two seasons. With football and basketball, our programs were never that good and were already declining before the coaching change.
