    Supplements?

After reading the p90x thread, it got me thinkin.

    Anyone here use any supplements?

And I know some people are going to have some smart *** comments, but save them. I dont care.

    I have used:

    Whey Protein
    Hydroxycut Hardcore
    Muscle Milk
    Methyl-1-alpha

I also have some Green tea sitting in my cabinet and some NO explode my roommate left when he moved out. I havent taken either yet.

    My reviews:

Whey protein- Pretty natural stuff and it worked wonders for me in high school. I could put on weight real quick between wrestling and summer.

Hydroxycut Hardcore- Real powerful. When you take the first one it makes you loopy, and it makes it impossible to eat after working out for a while. I have never done the recommended cycle on the back, though I could use to lose some weight. I dont use it for weight loss; actually I have a hard time seeing how it burns fat. I mean it is a stimulant... but other than that, it doenst seem to have much fat burning quality like it says it does. I use it before tests or class sometimes, as it really increases my concentration and alertness. It works by boosting production of noepinepherine, a neurotransmitter IIRC. I also take it right before I workout because it gets you in the mood. The thing that I dont like is it seems to raise my blood-pressure, and i get that heart in my throat feeling sometimes.

Muscle Milk- Garbage. Too high in calories, and it claims it is a fat burner. If anything it adds bulk.

Methyl-1-Alpha- Nasty stuff. real nasty. You are supposed to do cycles of 2 weeks on and a month off, and I only took two weeks and never took it again. I took it right before my senior year in football, and it definately cut me up. I lost some weight without trying, but I added plenty of strenght in that month during and directly after taking it. I also noticed some positive sexual side effects. It had way too many negative side effects. One day I slammed my best friend against the wall for eating the last of the crunch berries in his own house. I was just way more irritable. I am also starting to bald at age 20 which I feel is part stress, part methyl 1-a. I fear other problems will pop up not too far down the road. What methyl-1-alpha is is a pro-hormone. It is a substance that is not a hormone, but when processed in your liver is made into one and used as such.

I am working out again, and once I start getting back into the full swing of things I'll probably take something. In HS I was about 225 during football and 190 during wrestling, when I would quit lifting and just wrestle. My max bench was 315 and my 3 lift total was close to 1200 (I was a powerlifter). Now-a-days I am 235, which is not like I just added 10 lbs of fat on top of the 225. I havent lifted seriously since senior football. I probably would have a tough time getting up much more than 240 bench.

Anyone have any suggestions on positive experiences?

    I've taken NO-Xplode, Cell-mass, Glutamine, BCAA's, and Whey Protein.
I got the best results with NO-Xplode and Cell Mass. However, when taking those together my blood pressure was through the roof. So, I stopped and haven't taken them since, which was last spring. However, I think I'm going to start taking Cell-mass again.

I had a buddy who said that his energy during lifts was way higher when taking the NO-Xplode, but his cardio suffered. What did you think about it?

NO Xplode is awesome. I absolutely love the stuff. I go with Optimum Nutrition's proteins. They are really good and about the best priced stuff out there as far as proteins. Fat burners in my opinion are glorified caffeine pills for the most part.

A friendly reminder for those who don't care to read thoroughly- DO NOT, under any circumstances, take Illinoiscyclone's crunchberries. EVER.

I've never had better workouts when taking NO-Xplode and Cell-mass. I couldn't really tell ya much about the cardio, just because I wasn't focused on that at the time. But my energy and strength boosted fairly quickly. I took NO-Xplode about 15 minutes before my workout and then Cell-mass immediately after. A great combination.

When I was doing marathon training, I only took 1 supplement and it worked wonders:

To tell ya the truth, chocolate milk is an awesome thing to drink after workouts (of course depending on what your goals are). If I could afford it, I would drink a quart of chocolate milk everytime after I lifted weights.

That is what I did. After every long run I immediately drank a big glass. And then a few hours later I would eat a big bowl of cottage cheese. Otherwise I would hurt so much the next day I could not go up stairs.

men's health magazine highly recommended cottage cheese before bed to also help with over night digestion and fat burn.

From my experiences, the markup in stores is ridiculous. I always go to 1Fast400 - Nutritional supplements for health, athletics, diet, and bodybuilding, with free fitness information and articles because they offer useful reviews and articles (which of course you have to take with a grain of salt becuse some are written by the actual developer of the supps.) and they offer things at a highly discounted price.

this is actually what i have right now, the 5lb chocolate mint kind. it tastes just like an Andes mint. I wanted to try one of the fruit flavors, but those either have to be awesome or terrible. My neighbor last year got this protein by the makers of cellmass/no x-plode called dessert, and it tasted like liquid cinnamon rolls. It was about the best ive had as far as taste goes. sometimes i have to heat the chocomint up and add some sugar and drink it like hot chocolate.

I learned in a FSHN class that protein uptake, even of your natural protein, is like 150% more effective when coupled with a dairy product. they arent totally sure what does it, but they think it is the calcium acting as a cofactor or something.

    Re: Supplements?

During my junior year of high school I took whey powder for about a month to two months. It certainly worked as by the time I was a senior I had gained 30 lbs. Some of that I'm sure was me just filling out my frame but I couldn't put weight on for crap before I started taking that. But man did I hate drinking that crap. One massive glass of chalky crap and I usually felt like throwing up when I had to do hang cleans or any type of explosion workouts.

Took some form of creatine that was supposedly for leg explosion and increasing vertical leap but it had pretty much no effect.

If anybody knows of a good supplement for adding tone I'd be interested. I've got good muscle size but I'd like to really tone it out.

    Re: Supplements?

I don't mind the calories in Muscle Milk because I basically have it as my breakfast after morning workouts. If anything it's the best tasting protein source out there...
