    Can Anyone?

Me and my friends were discussing how hard it is to just make a D3 school to play football. We think that almost anyone can make a team. You have to have lots of talent to play but it seems anyone can make a team. A player on my high school team just was a Conferance honorable mention his senior year and wasn't all that good he didn't even start. He played for Grinnel.

    Re: Can Anyone?

There is a huge difference of being on the team in D3 and ever seeing the field.

    Re: Can Anyone?

In a lot of cases if you are an average HS athlete, really want to play past HS, and not picky you can find a school that will take you. I played HS football with a kid that probaly ran a 5.2 40 and he went to a small college and played WR. There are also good athletes at these schools as well, the talent just drops off fast.

    Re: Can Anyone?

I would say it is pretty easy to talk about doing it... But actually doing it is a whole 'nother thing.

Especially if you play for a non-scholarship program, like Drake's. You are basically just playing becuase you love the game.

    Re: Can Anyone?

Depends on the program. Most Iowa conference schools, the Wartburgs / Waldorfs / Coes / Simpsons of the world you have to be decent. They're filled with kids that were at least all-district and were either under-sized or just didn't want to ride the pine at a D1.

I got a letter from St Olaf ... so apparently ANYONE can be recruited by them.

    Re: Can Anyone?

Most of these are dead-on. To my knowledge, no D3 schools cut, and they need lots of bodies for scout team. There was 150 guys on the team when I was at Wartburg, Maybe 40 sniffed the field on a Saturday. Its not uncommon for some top-tier teams to have close to 200 on the squad. When there is a good thing going, guys want to be a part of it.
To the Original Poster's question- Grinnell is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to D3 football. Up until very recently, I don't even think coaches were allowed off campus to recruit. They had to convince guys to play football once they enrolled. That, is NCAA football in its purest form.

I've watched the most horrific players from my high school start at D3 schools.

Small midwest school near Sioux City. I'm not going to start naming names to protect the innocent, but we had a kid play maybe 10 minutes our senior year, then I heard tell of him starting in college.

I was more wondering which college. There are some very bad football teams out there.

Does this include the coaches going to area High Schools and meeting with possible recruits? I talked to some coaches at our High School back in 2002, but maybe that is considered recently though.

    Re: Can Anyone?

Agreed with most previous posts. The game play at your average D3 school is very slow just like a 2A or 3A high school. I am not ragging on that Class of school football, I played at an Class A school, but the game is definitely different between classes.

As far as the starters at D3 schools being D1 quality athletes that do not want to ride the pine, I totally disagree. If you have a chance to walk-on at ISU/Iowa or where ever, you think you would go to a D3 school just to get playing time. I do not think so.
